What is the most unpopular Pokémon in the series?

Anyone wondering what the most unpopular thing is Pokemon no need to look any further. The data has been compiled, fans have been invited to vote and the jury has decided. There are many, many Pokémon out there, so narrowing them down to your most and least favorites is quite a challenge, but with very interesting results.

With 9 generations of Pokemon and more to come, there are over 1000 Pokémon that people need to analyze to find their favorites. This often leaves some out, although almost every Pokémon has a fan somewhere due to the sheer number of Pokémon fans and how long the franchise has been growing. However, there is one Pokémon with fewer fans than most.

Rellor is the most unpopular Pokémon

Everyone's least favorite

Rellor, according to YouTuber Thomas game documents who designed this research project, is the most unpopular Pokémon. Thomas created this research by setting up a voting system on a website built from scratch. This was an improved system from a previous version, and in total there were 1,025 Pokémon to classify. This was every Pokémon Thomas compiled that had an exclusive Pokédex entry.

There was a huge amount of voting data, which Thomas was able to compare to an older piece of this research he did using Google search results. Ultimately, the bottom 20 tended to include a fair number of weird Pokémon that seemed like downright bad ideas. This included Pokémon like The Diapered Pokémon and those that were forgettable and common like Cascoon. At the very bottom is Rellor, the Rolling Pokémon, designed after a dung beetle.

Why does everyone seem to hate Rellor

What makes Rellor so unlikely

Thomas speculates that Rellor falls victim to being 1) designed from a dung beetle, 2) having nothing notable to differentiate them from other similar insect Pokémon, and 3) being a Generation 9 Pokémon. The latter was mainly due to Scarlet and Violet games being controversial and brand new. Many fans may not have gotten attached to these Pokémon yet, although there are some Gen 9 favorites among fans.

It could just be that Rellor is completely normal. Bug Pokémon have done very well with the fanbase when they are designed well. However, they can also be less memorable when they all seem to work together. There are a good number of beetle-like Pokémon now, and the general idea of a beetle Pokémon seems far-fetched. With Rellor being the last entry, it makes sense that they would also be the least liked. In this case, it's much more about Rellor being off-putting than actively hated. After all, who wants to vote for them?

Why Rellor isn't surprising as the most unpopular Pokémon

Rellor Pokémon S and V

There's not much to be surprised about here. Many of the bottom 20 are Pokémon that people just don't care about, rather than ones that generate much controversy. Pokémon that generate controversy usually have many contenders on both sides – those who hate it and those who love it. Some can even transform into monsters Dungeons and Dragons. However, the bottom 20 are those who simply failed to make an impact. Nobody defends them on the other side of things because nobody really cares. In a fandom with over 1000 unique Pokémon, one of them has to come last.

Rellor is simply lost among the masses in a Pokémon type that already seems saturated. There are many types of Bugs to choose from, and even those that exist are not always people's favorites. There are always exceptions, but many people don't like bugs much and will avoid these Pokémon – whether they like it or not. There is also no current typing that is only weak to Bug types. In fact, those that do have at least two other major weaknesses.

This makes the Bug type pretty normal in general, and Rellor is behind it. This is unfortunate for Rellor themselves, but not a huge surprise overall. The second least popular is the Bruxish, which is a little more surprising given its colorful appearance and status as the Hawaiian state fish. However, once again the field is saturated with fish-like Pokémon, and perhaps people are just looking for something new in their Pokédex entries in the next generation of Pokemon.
