Thanking the man who was kidnapped and tried to kill him as he bleeds from gun and knife wounds is undoubtedly a power move, but there is a deeper reasoning in Iris’s final words to Richard. Iris insults him saying that the accident made him go crazy, to which Richard counters by saying that he hasn’t gone crazy; he found clarity. He thanked Chloe as he watched her die, as if, in some twisted way, seeing her dead released a genuine part of himself that he hadn’t known before.

Richard’s hope seems to be to recreate the feeling he had when he saw Chloe die, which he believes has profound spiritual value.

After Chloe’s death, Richard continued his life as a sociopathic killer. The phone call scene shows that he has a wife and daughter, but regularly leaves them for retreats at his cabin in the woods, where he kills women. Richard’s hope seems to be to recreate the feeling he had when he saw Chloe die, which he believes has profound spiritual value. It’s all a very twisted reaction to the shock of Chloe’s death, which rewired his brain or brought out a part of him that had always been buried inside him.
