What happens to Griffons in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Dragon Age: The Veil Guard is an RPG with many emotional moments of sadness, worry and sometimes even anger. This is a difficult journey for player-controlled character Rook and his companions to save Thedas from the evil machinations of the gods, and it comes with no guarantees that anyone will survive the ordeal. When it comes to animal companions, emotions can become even greater for some, and the threat of sweet animal friends falling victim to war might be enough to make someone turn off the game.

Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. When reviewing Dragon Age: The Veil GuardIt’s clear that one of the cutest characters in the game is a young griffin named Assan who is being raised by the Gray Director, Davrin. Although there were many griffins in the world, at that time The Veil Guard happens, these powerful animals are believed to be extinct. The Gray Wardens have rescued a small clutch of eggs, and now a litter of baby griffins was hidden in a hidden nest and are being trained to help in the battle against the plague.

The first meeting with the Griffons does not bode well for their fate

Meeting Gray Director Davrin and Assan

Coinciding with the moment when Rook and one of his companions come to find Davrin, a Gray Warden known to be a talented monster hunter, there is an attack happening at the griffin nest where Davrin is. This nest houses many young griffons from the same egg family. This includes one named Assan, who Davrin has been helping train. Rook finds Davrin and Assan in a dangerous situation and discovers that all the griffins except Assan have been caged with special blood magic locks.

Rook springs into action and helps Davrin fight a large, ruined Ogre, but unfortunately, the group is unable to rescue the griffins before they are taken by the infamous Gloom Howler. No one knows what the Dark Howler wants with these griffins, but she has been seen killing Gray Wardens, and clearly her intentions are not friendly. Davrin’s fellow Gray Wardens in the nest did not survive the Dark Howler’s attack, and Davrin agrees to help Rook, with Assan always at his side.

Assan and Davrin learn to trust each other

Yes, you can hug the Griffon in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Between missions in the game, players can talk to Davrin to learn more about his character and see how he is doing. Many of these conversations revolve around Assan, as do several of the dialogues that take place between Davrin and other companions (at one point, Taash is even giving Davrin hints about Assan’s excrement). Eventually, Rook is able to progress Davrin’s personal story arc, which involves tracking down information about who the Gloom Howler is and what she could be planning with the griffins, and whether it’s too late to do anything about it.

It’s important to remember that Assan is not just a pet. Davrin’s skills and abilities involve using signaling for Assan to attackand Assan appears in the overworld at times when players need his help. He may not always be visible on screen, but if Davrin is there, so is Assan.

That being said, whenever they are at the Lighthouse, Rook can pet, hug, and play with Assan. Likewise, players can pet most of the game’s dogs and cats or play rock-paper-scissors with Manfred, Emmrich’s skeletal assistant. However, none are exactly the same as being able to hug the adorable young griffin.

Who is The Gloom Howler and what was his story

And your misguided scheme

Dragon Age The Veilguard The Dark Howler

By talking to his contacts in the Gray Wardens, Davrin is able to track down information about the Dark Howler and even the person who originally found the lost clutch of eggs that Assan and his brothers came from. They think that The Dark Howler was, in life, a wizard of the Gray Wardens named Isseya. During the Exalted Era, Headmaster Isseya was ordered to subject all griffins to a modified blood magic ritual, similar to the Union that all Gray Wardens undergo, which was supposed to make the griffins more powerful and immune to the taint.

For more information on the history of what happened to griffins in the tradition of Dragon Agethe official romance Dragon Age: Last Flight explains the story, including Isseya’s role, in detail.

Unfortunately, this did not work as it should, and the griffin species was completely wiped out shortly after the ritual, except for the last remaining clutch of thirteen eggs that included Assan. The destroyed griffins had greater speed and strength between the time of their modified union and their deaths, but they were also much more aggressive, attacking even the Guardians. Not all griffins were subjected to this ritual, but Unfortunately, their version of the taint became contagious and quickly spread throughout the species..

The Griffons are saved from The Gloom Howler plot

Who is the Gloom Howler and what was his misguided scheme

As soon as the Dark Howler learned that Assan and his brothers existed, she was overcome by the need to perform the same ritual on themin a twisted way of thinking that she was saving them and freeing them from the control of the Gray Wardens. As part of her plan, she also destroyed several members of the Gray Wardens faction and built a mysterious alternate version of the Gray Wardens camp known as Weisshaupt.

Davrin, with Rook and Assan, find this location and fight the Gloom Howler. Assan was the remaining griffon of the Dark Howler’s plan, and she tries to draw him to her. After a fight with Assan about to be killed, the battle is won and all the griffins are saved.

Players can choose where the Griffons go after they are rescued

Protectors of Arlathan Forest or continue with the Gray Wardens

After Assan’s brothers are saved, Davrin gathers some trusted people to decide what to do with the family. Over the course of Davrin’s time with Assan, he has seen the softer side of the griffins, altering his previous belief that they are destined only to be powerful hunters of darkspawn and the Plague. The choice comes down to returning the griffins to the Gray Wardens where they belonged, or releasing them to be protectors of the Arlathan forest.

This choice is left up to the player, as Davrin asks Rook to help him decide. Any choice will result in the griffins being watched and cared for, with a bright future ahead of them after the events of Dragon Age: The Veil Guard.
