Notice! SPOILERS for Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, Episode 8 ahead.
Mika Yasuda’s arc was stirred in Grey’s Anatomy
season 21, and its midseason finale, finally wrapped up her storyline, doing so in a bittersweet way considering what her departure from Gray Sloan Memorial might mean for some characters. Midori Francis’ departure from Grey’s Anatomy was announced when season 20 was still airing, making it possible for the medical drama to create an impactful exit storyline that would do justice to Mika Yasuda. Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 8 seemingly did this, letting Francis show off his range in his farewell episode and establishing a different balance within the group of interns.
Grey’s Anatomy season 21 got off to an incredible start for Mika, who was not only readmitted to the operating room but also shared a moment with Jules in Grey’s Anatomy season 20 finale. However, Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, Episode 3 already hinted at how poignant her arc before Francis’ departure would have beenas her younger sister Chloe was diagnosed with cancer and she had to deal with it and take care of her. Mika and Chloe’s car accident only made things worse, with Chloe dying Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 7, effectively making Mika responsible for his sister’s death.
Mika officially leaves Grey’s Anatomy, season 21, episode 8
Mika survived the car accident, but Chloe didn’t, which affected her greatly
Mika seemed to accept his sister’s death better than expected in Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 8, at least based on her willingness to return to work to form a new routine. However, helping Bailey while her patient suffered from cardiac arrest brought Mika back to the day of the car accident and how it was her fault. Mika’s heartbreaking outburst asking Bailey to “save her” and “to take her” instead showed how much she blamed herself for Chloe’s deathalong with her inability to walk the halls of Gray Sloan without seeing Chloe wherever she went.
[Mika being sure she would continue to see Chloe everywhere at Grey Sloan] restricted her choices, effectively making her realize that the only way she could have moved forward included leaving Seattle for good.
Mika did not hide her difficulties from the other interns, instead relying on them, especially Jules. The two finally getting together made the situation even sadder after Mika spoke to Bailey. Although Bailey just wanted Mika to rest longer, Mika was sure that seeing Chloe everywhere around Gray Sloan wouldn’t have changed with more rest.. This restricted Mika’s choices, effectively making her realize that the only way she could have moved on included leaving Seattle altogether, thus simultaneously making Mika leaving the best thing for her right now and incredibly miserable based on what it would mean for Mika and Jules.
Mika’s story begins Grey’s Anatomy season 21 was painful because of what she had to go through, but Dealing with Chloe’s death also gave Midori Francis the best possible storyline to showcase her acting skillssomething probably on her mind, given her reasons for leaving the medical drama. In fact, although the off-screen drama has persuaded others Grey’s Anatomy actors leave the show, Midori Francis’ departure was described as “friendly” and motivated by Francisco wanting to take over “next step”in his career.
Can Mika still return to Grey’s Anatomy?
Mika’s return could happen, but not anytime soon
Mika’s departure from Gray Sloan prepared her to improve despite the bleak picture Grey’s Anatomy season 21 painted her emotional state. While her arc provided good motivation as to why she could no longer stay at Gray Sloan Memorial, it also gave Mika the possibility to return in the future. for a visit when she finally processes Chloe’s death. However, Grey’s Anatomy should give Mika time to heal before preparing for her possible return, especially after it’s forced her to go through so much since season 19.
