While Hot cold is mostly a happy, holiday movie, her story contains a bit of tragedy regarding Kathy's previous husband. Kathy, played by Lacey Chabert, is one of the two main characters in Netflix's 2024 Christmas fantasy romantic comedy. She lives in the small town of Hope Springs, where she owns a diner. One night, after one of Kathy's friends presents her with a red scarf (which is magical, unbeknownst to her), she wraps it around a snowman, who then comes to life and completely changes Kathy's world.
Dustin Milligan stars as Jack (the Snowman) alongside Chabert in the cast of Hot cold on Netflix. Over the course of the (mostly) light-hearted film, Kathy and Jack fall in love. However, in addition to Kathy's reservations due to what happened to her last husband, one of the couple's biggest problems is that Jack's time on Earth is seemingly finite. It's only a matter of time before it melts. The good news is that Hot cold is a Christmas movie, which means magic is everywhere, giving Jack ample opportunity to survive. Sadly, magic couldn't cure Kathy's husband, Paul.

As the audience discovers at the beginning of the Netflix Christmas film, Kathy is a widow. Your husband, Paul, died two years before the story in Hot cold. When Kathy leaves Jack home alone, he goes through her things a little and finds Paul's medical files. They contain a schedule mentioning surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, informing viewers that Paul had some form of cancer.
When Jack asks Kathy about what he found in his basement, she explains that everything with Paul happened very quickly. So he didn't have cancer long before he died. After his death, Kathy stopped taking care of herself (and her house, since Paul was the one who took care of all the repairs in the house). The pain of losing Paul seemingly overwhelmed Lacey Chabert's character. Fortunately, for Hot coldIn Kathy's ending, Kathy learns to prioritize her needs and take chances on love again.

An unfortunate consequence of Kathy's grief was her inability to cook for herself or her clients. Kathy explains to Jack that when she and Paul opened the diner, she helped the cook and wrote some of the restaurant's recipes (including a Christmas Eve sweet potato casserole). Everything changed when Paul died. However, Jack brings some joy (and cooking) back into Kathy's life.
