What happened to Connie’s mentor in Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Connie, one of the main characters in Mario and Luigi: Brotherhoodis generally positive and proactive throughout the game, but she frequently mentions her sadness regarding her missing mentor, Mrs. Cozette apparently disappeared at the same time the original Uni-Tree was destroyed and the world of Concordia was destroyed. In flashbacks, players can catch glimpses of this kind teacher who inspired and guided Connie in her life, and it sets a somewhat sinister tone to what could have happened in this story-driven RPG where no one seems to actually die.

Warning: the following article contains spoilers for Mario and Luigi: Brotherhood.

The story of Mario and Luigi: Brotherhood revolves around the disaster that occurred following the destruction of the Uni-Tree in Concordia. That Uni-Tree was a giant tree that stood in the center of the land of Concordia and held this world together through a power known as Connect. Connectar spread from the Uni-Tree to the Great Lighthouses and to each individual area of the land, uniting them and empowering them all. After the destruction, Cozette disappeared and little Connie decided to try to grow a new Uni-Tree and unite the world again.

Who is Connie’s mentor, Cozette

Previously, The Wattanist of the Uni-Tree

Before this cataclysmic event, Cozette was the Wattanist and caretaker of the Uni-Tree. She was teaching Connie how to be a Wattanist so she could one day follow in her footsteps. From the way Connie talks and the flashbacks, it seems like she was essentially playing a mother role to Connie as she grew up. Cozette is portrayed as someone who is kind, gentle, and quite quiet and introspective. Most of all, she loved the land of Concord and the Uni-Tree.

What happened to Cozete?

Brainwashing is a dangerous thing

In her role as caretaker and Wattanist of the Uni-Tree and the Connectar stream, Cozette would travel to the Great Lighthouses to ensure everything was running smoothly. During one of his visits to a Great Lighthouse, she came across a mysterious egg that spoke to her. The egg was that of the Recluse, an evil spirit who hates any connection and values only solitude. Trapped inside her egg, Reclusa managed to brainwash Cozette into helping him escape the egg’s prison and re-enter the world.

After being brainwashed, Cozette took on an entirely new personality and role as the nefarious Zokket. Zokket is who players are led to believe is the boss throughout Mario and Luigi’s Concordia journey, but ultimately was just another pawn. Despite Cozette’s love for Connie and the strong bond that exists between them, the control Recluse had over Cozette is shown in Zokket’s deep hatred for Connie. Zokket even claims that Connie’s light will go out at Zokket’s hands, even though Zokket has delegated all other fights to his Extension Corp minions.

Zokket’s statement in the game of “Connie… You bother the recesses of my mind” followed by the personal threat that Zokket will take Connie’s life is perhaps a sign of Recluse speaking through Zokket. Connie keeps insisting that her mentor will return and save her, and that Mrs. Cozette will be there at the end. Recluse is probably furious I see Connie talking to Zokket this way, while Cozette, deep inside Zokket somewhere, tries to remember.

Does Cozette survive in Mario & Luigi: Brothership?

After the fall of Zokket

While trying to save Concordia, Mario and Luigi finally fight Zokket, deep within Zokket Fortress and in front of the dangerous Recluse egg. After defeating Zokket, the injured Zokket lying on the floor transforms back into Cozette’s original personalitywho was completely out of control of herself as Zokket. Her job is done, despite Mario and Luigi’s best efforts, and finally Reclusa emerges to further spread the evil Glohm and destruction.

Mario and Luigi help Cozette escape and take her to Shipshape, where she rests and talks to Connie and the others about Recluse’s plans. Once well enough, however, Cozette’s guilt leads her to run away alone after Recluse to atone for his mistakes while Zokket.

Mario, Luigi, Snoutlet, and Connie find Cozette beaten and beaten in Reclusa’s hideout after their attempts to stop Reclusa were thwarted. Connie stays by Cozette’s side as the brothers move on. In the end, Cozette survives the entire ordeal and escapes with the heroes to participate in the celebrations of Reclusa’s defeat. Cozette praises Connie for growing a new Uni-Tree and for all the work Connie has done to save the world Mario and Luigi: Brotherhood.
