'What We Became' was one of Michonne's most eventful episodes on The Walking Dead

Before returning in the series finale, Michonne's final episode Undead came in season 10, episode 13, “What We Became”.

Having sailed with Virgílio to the island where his family is, they arrive and find the naval base abandoned. Very quickly, Michonne begins to suspect that something is not right, and her suspicions are soon confirmed when she discovers that Virgil's family is dead. The weapons he was promised are also nowhere to be seen. Realizing she was lied to, things take a strange turn when Michonne starts hearing other voices in the complex. When she searches for their source, Virgil arrests her, locking Michonne in a room overnight.

Michonne learns the truth from others who lived and worked at the naval base with Virgil until he arrested them too. Virgílio was receptive to the newcomers, but soon revealed his true and malicious intentions. One night, a riot broke out and, amid the chaos, Virgil locked all the doors in the building – only he didn't realize that his family was still inside.

Virgil served Michonne breakfast, only to tell her that he had drugged him with a hallucinogen. She experiences a psychedelic vision in which she is first visited by Siddiq etchicken imagines her life if she had never saved Andrea or met Rickinstead joined Negan and the Saviors, where she was seen wielding Lucille.

As soon as Michonne wakes up, she attacks Virgil and takes his keys. While she frees everyone, Virgílio escapes and burns the boat. Although incredibly angry, Michonne shows Virgil mercy but demands that he return his belongings. As Michonne gathers her things, she sees Rick's cowboy boots, the pair he's been wearing since season one.

She demands that Virgil show her where he found them, and he takes Michonne to a ship that has appeared on the island. Inside, she finds an old smartphone with Rick's name on it, illustrations of her and Judith, as well as some Japanese writing etched into its glass screen. That's when Michonne finally realizes that Rick is alive.

Michonne speaks to Judith Grimes, revealing to her that the “brave man“may be alive, and she goes looking for him. She leaves the island with the others, and when Michonne reaches the mainland, she once again takes two walkers as her chained guards.

Looking almost identical to when she first appeared in UndeadMichonne heads north toward the last destination listed on the ship's manifest: “New Jersey Shipyard.” Along the way, she comes across a frightened pair desperate to catch up with their group, and Michonne agrees to help them. As they left, it was revealed that the group was a huge procession of hundreds of people.

Michonne leaves The Walking Dead to find Rick

After Season 10, Michonne goes to New Jersey

…her mission was obvious – she's trying to find Rick.

Michonne was not killed in Undeadbut she never fully returned to the series between season 10 and the series finale. Where exactly she was going at the end of “What We Become” wasn't clear at the time, but her mission was obvious — she's trying to find Rick.

The only clue she had, however, was the ship's manifest for the New Jersey Shipyard. That in itself wasn't much to think about, but Michonne is a resourceful survivor, and if any groups well-supplied enough to send a ship from New Jersey to Virginia are still in the shipyards, she'll find them.

This is, of course, assuming Michonne has no problems with the new group, but because this is Undeadproblems with a new group seem almost guaranteed. It's been six years since Rick was taken away by helicopter, so there's no telling exactly when in those six years he was on the ship. Also, if he managed to get so close to Alexandria, why didn't Rick go home?

The group that took Rick away was identified in an episode of Fear the undead as Military of the Civic Republic The CRM is described as a mysterious organization with a mission that is somehow linked to the future of all humanity.

As shown in The Walking Dead: The World Beyondthey are also ruthless killers, which didn't bode well for Rick. It was also shown that they were holding Rick against his will even after saving his life. In this case, if he needs rescuing, who better to do it than Michonne? Why CRM wanted Rick in the first place is explored in Those who live.

Michonne appeared at the end of The Walking Dead

All over Undead in season 11, viewers wondered if Michonne would return. Michonne and Rick have appeared before TWD concluded, but it wasn't until the main story ended and the survivors defeated the evil rulers of the Commonwealth. Two brief scenes included Rick Grimes and Michonne, although neither revealed where Michonne went. A post-credits scene showed Rick on a small beach area outside of town. However, a helicopter appears and demands Rick to surrender again. Before that, he throws the phone into a boat – the same phone Michonne found.

This scene was intriguing, because when CRM appeared on the Fear the undead and The Walking Dead: The World Beyondit was shown that they had no qualms about killing deserters or those who fled. It seems CRM needs Rick for something, which is why they kept him alive. However, the next scene showed Michonne on horseback with her sword, decapitating Walkers, still looking for Rick. It appears she has now left the large group she encountered in her last appearance, and her search for Rick Grimes has continued.

Michonne returns in The Walking Dead spin-off

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live showed where Michonne is going

Originally, Rick and Michonne THE Undead the reunion was supposed to take place in a series of films. All of that has changed. Instead, Rick and Michonne Undead property is a spinoff series titled The Walking Dead: Those Who Live, one of three TWD spinoffs set after the events of season 11. The Rick and Michonne spinoff arrived in 2024 and was originally described by AMC as a “epic love story.”

The miniseries backtracked so audiences could give more context to Rick's time at the CRM and explore how Michonne finds Rick. Most of the miniseries, however, focuses on Michonne trying to get Rick out of their clutches as they want him to become an officer in their ranks, and Rick trying to stay to make sure the CRM doesn't go after his family. It's as much a miniseries about espionage as it is about a zombie apocalypse.

Ultimately, though, it's that epic love story that AMC promised by bringing Rick and Michonne together in the finale.
