A possible revival of Weeds has received a development update from series star Mary-Louise Parker after a year of no news, revealing whether or not the series will indeed return. The Showtime original follows the story of Nancy Botwin (Parker), a single mother who decides to start selling marijuana to help keep her family’s life afloat. The show was nominated for multiple Emmys and Golden Globes during its run, ending with season 8 in 2012. In May 2023, it was revealed Parker would return for a Weeds Sequel series on Showtime, but news was scarce.
Now, talk to The playlist on their The Discourse Podcast, Parker revealed the revival of Weeds Does not go forward anymore. The actor explained how, despite the interest in having her back for the series, it was ultimately decided that the show would not be coming back. She explained how great it was that the series managed to run for eight years, although she wishes she could return with the rest of the cast for more. Check out what Parker had to say below:
They don’t want anymore. So they drag it out for a really long time. And then I guess they decided, ‘No.’ But everyone in the cast, it’s really kind of amazing that everyone at the end of eight years loved each other. And that’s kind of amazing. And I would love to have it again. But really, well.
What the cancellation of the Weeds sequel series means for the show
Showtime is not interested in the dark comedy
Weeds Lasted until season 8 on Showtime before it came to a close, though talks of a revival have been ongoing since before its original network had plans to bring it back. in 2019, A sequel with the title See 4.20 was in development at StarzBring back Parker with producer Victoria Morrow set for showrunner. However, this project evolved into the canceled revival, dashing hopes that Nancy’s future after the events of the series would ever be shown on the small screen.

The decision for The series won’t be coming back also coincides with Showtime’s revival of some of their more popular series. This includes the upcoming Dexter: Original Sin And Dexter: ResurrectionA prequel and sequel series to Dexter respectively, as well as four spinoffs of the business drama Billions. Because the network prioritizes the continuation of their successful dramas in different forms, it seems Weeds has fallen to the wayside, potentially because of the other revivals and continuations the network is now pursuing.
Our take on the revival of weeds does not happen anymore
A disappointing update for a classic Showtime series
Although the original series was able to offer a definitive end for Nancy after her long journey, a potential Weeds Revival would be interesting to see, especially after so much time. Although it is understandable why Showtime prioritizes series like Dexter And Billions to expand them into franchises, The dark comedy could easily fit into their lineup if they decided to follow through with it. Now that the project has been shelved, however, it seems unlikely to come back for good.
