WB’s Game Of Thrones Movie Plan Won’t Solve Season 8 Problems

Game of Thrones may be coming to the big screen, with a film in development at Warner Bros. But does this mean that there will actually be a direct continuation of the show, with members of Game of Thrones‘ cast returning? Right now, the plan is only in the early stages, with no director, writer, or actor attached, which means in theory, it could be anything. However, while there are many stories to draw from, only a few would make sense – or rather, be big enough – as a theatrical release.

This could be something like Robert’s Rebellion or Aegon’s Conquest, but it’s not hard to imagine continuing afterward. Game of Thrones‘, as divisive as it was, would be appealing to WB. It would be a surprise, but This is a world where there is a new Lord of the Rings movie set during Brotherhood and one Harry Potter remake coming in the next few years (from Warner Bros. Discovery, no less), so it can’t be ruled out, especially since it would likely be a box office hit.

When the Game of Thrones movie was reported, there was natural speculation that this is what they would be doing, and until it is confirmed what the movie is, it remains on the table. Plus, there’s been talk of a Jon Snow spin-off, with Kit Harington open to a return, so it’s certainly plausible, even if it’s not necessarily likely. But if that happened, would it be a good idea? And would this correct the perceived errors in Season 8? I’m not so sure about that.

The Game Of Thrones movie can’t make up for season 8’s problems

Not even a 9th season would solve the ending

To be clear, I liked it Game of Thrones Season 8, but when looking at whether a movie (or even Season 9) is a good idea, it’s worth considering the bigger picture. And obviously, the response to Season 8 – and the finale in particular – has been overwhelmingly negative, at least in general terms from the fandom, both die-hard and casual. The ending is typically seen as “bad” and I don’t see how any kind of sequel, short of major retcons or simply a remake, would really fix anything. for anyone disappointed with how things ended.

Bran Stark would be king; Daenerys Targaryen would be dead, killed by Jon Snow.

Any Game of Thrones the 9th season or movie would still have to play with the status quo left by the finale. Bran Stark would be king; Daenerys Targaryen would be dead, killed by Jon Snow. Jaime Lannister still returned to Cersei and died with her in the Red Keep. The White Walkers were still dealt with in three episodes; The Long Night only lasted one night. Even if it were to dispel some – like the theories about Daenerys being resurrected by a Red Priestess – it would make them feel worse and diminish the narrative and thematic value they possess.

Could a Game of Thrones movie find a way to flesh out Bran’s character that justifies the decision to make him king enough for those who don’t like it? Will this take into account his struggles to rule, that making him king was a mistake, that actually, now, this time they are really going to break the wheel? Could you find a story compelling enough to bring Jon Snow back into the fold, when a spinoff has already tried and failed to do so? Will Dorne and the Iron Islands suddenly decide they don’t agree to be part of a united Seven Kingdoms?

Say what you want Game of Thrones‘ series finale – the aim here is not to reignite any debates about its quality – but and a finale, wrapping up the character arcs and stories that have been at the helm of the entire show. Their lives go on, but there’s not much in terms of promising more stories It’s worth telling, and to continue like this, I think it would probably be forced. There would probably be an element of trying to correct course and appease fansleaving no happy side, not unlike something like Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalkerexcept with less to build on.

Game Of Thrones Is Best To Avoid Most Of Your Main Characters

There is so much more in this world to explore

Maisie Williams as Arya in the Game of Thrones season 8 finale

For the most part, I don’t think it’s worth revisiting Game of Thrones‘main characters, at least not in a way that would require almost all of them to return. It would risk further damaging the series’ legacy and character endings that worked – at least in general terms – like Sansa Stark being Queen in the North or Jon returning beyond the Wall (a fitting fate, even if there could be arguments about how this happened – would have to be stopped.

If there was a sequel, for me, the only real option would be an Arya Stark spinoff, following her adventures to discover what lies west of Westeros.

If there was a sequel, for me, the only real option would be an Arya Stark spinoff, following her adventures to discover what lies west of Westeros. This could be something unique, explore different parts of the world, allow for new characters, and wouldn’t require other cast members to return. Even this is not entirely “necessary” (as much as any work of art can be called that), but the idea has more potential.

Otherwise, WB and HBO better keep exploring Westeros’ past (and beyond). Martin created a world with a history dating back more than 10,000 years; there is a lot to choose from. Make a film of Aegon’s Conquest. Do the Game of Thrones spinoffs already in progress. But for the main show, there is no need to go back. Fortunately, I don’t think it’s the most likely option, but I hope it’s avoided nonetheless.
