With the theatrical interest in the franchise not too enthusiastic (and the critical responses tend to be mixed), it is not surprising that a fourth film has taken so long to get off the ground. The premise of Riddick returning to his home planet where he faces off against a new enemy may suggest that Riddick: Fury will serve as something of a fresh start for the franchise. If no prior franchise knowledge is required for this new entry, it could end up bringing new fans on board.
