This may not be the first time Vi and Caitlyn kissed, although it was passionate; Vi stayed at Caitlyn’s house in season one, and the creative team confirmed that they deliberately avoided showing whether they were intimate, leaving that up to viewers’ imaginations. Now, however, there is clarity. Unfortunately, although Yee hinted that viewers would be happy with the romance, it doesn’t look like things will go well.

The problem, however, is that Caitlyn and Vi seem to be on very different paths. Vi is desperate for her love not to change, but the sad truth is that Caitlyn’s grief after her mother’s death has already changed her; she’s tougher, more brutal and vengeful, and is willing to accept collateral damage as she and Vi hunt Jinx. This willingness to sacrifice others is too much for Vi, and the two part ways – only for Caitlyn to later be appointed to the final position of power in Piltover.

Arcane season two has felt like a tragic love story so far, but that doesn’t mean it will end in sadness. It’s reasonable to assume that the love between Caitlyn and Vi will become one of the central plotlines, with Vi trying to pull Caitlyn back from the abyss of sadness she’s faced deeply. The story took a dark turn, but Arcane season 2, acts 2 and 3 may yet see their love redeemed.
