Veilguard’s lack of evil player choice options could be bad news for the next Mass Effect game

Dragon Age: The Veil Guard revives the iconic franchise after its decade-long hiatus, but despite garnering mostly positive reception, Guard of the Veil has received waves of controversy since its release. While Guard of the Veil was made by an entirely new team after the disastrous launch of Andromeda Mass Effect years earlier, BioWare had a lot to prove to fans of both franchises. While it manages to fix many issues players had with the previous sci-fi outing with Andromeda, Guard of the Veil has not yet reached what fans expect from a sequel to the beloved Dragon Age franchise.

Although negative feedback did not impede the general release too severely, Veilguard’s problems left many players afraid of the future of the next Mass Effect game. Although the two iconic franchises have completely different settings, they share similar core ideas with dynamic companion romance options and impressive writing styles that benefit greatly from player choice. Unfortunately for Dragon Age: The Guard of the Veil, its dialogue choices are some of the weakest in the franchise, lacking the divisive or outright evil choices of previous entries.

A disappointing selection of dialogue options

Taking control away from the player by creating a unique protagonist

By far one of the biggest complaints about Guard of the Veil it’s how limited the dialogue options are throughout the game, taking away the freedom that made its successful franchises so popular. Dialogue circles with various tone results tend to fail in their delivery, as the cruelest dialogue choices sound a little harsher than the others, with the exception of a few rare instances scattered throughout the game. Many players also feel that there are not as many decisions to be made in Guard of the Veil as it should be, with most choices having similar results until the last few hours of the game’s story.

Veilguard’s the final act and multiple endings support the impact and dark story players have come to expect from a Dragon Age installment, but fans were disappointed that this level of quality was not maintained throughout the rest of the Veilguard’s narrative. In addition to the lack of player choice, much of the dialogue throughout Guard of the Veil is much happier and funnier than before, feeling out of place in the series’ fantasy setting.

The lack of evil or conflict-generating dialogue options is likely the result of this general shift in light-hearted tone, lacking much of the edge or variety that has made the series so unique in the past.

Concerns about the future of the next Mass Effect game

A watered down version of previous social mechanics

While Dragon Age and Mass Effect are completely different games in their own right, many of the problems players have had with Guard of the Veil may make it difficult to break habits in future games, particularly in their writing styles. The morality system of the original Mass Effect The trilogy gave players a drastic amount of freedom over how they wanted a social encounter to play out, allowing them to make reactionary decisions in Veilguard’s narrative.

Putting Mass Effect Iconic dialogue aside, many fans like the Reddit user Alternative_Fan2458 it still seemed like the past Dragon Age games have far superior conversation options compared to Guard of the Veil’It’s a supposedly bland writing direction.

Where these issues become more prevalent are related to Veilguard’s companions, without serious conflicts or choices that could cause partisan conflicts or infightingunlike the previous Dragon Age games where members would have more dynamic reactions to player choices. Overall, much of the world in Guard of the Veil has the potential to create interesting and impactful character stories, but it is often hampered by the game’s unnatural and harmless writing style.

Another common complaint from critical fans was Veilguard’s new art style direction, which aimed for more cartoonish design options for the characters. Fortunately for fans concerned about this new direction, according to the developers, Veilguard’s the style will not carry over to the next Mass Effect game.

There’s still hope for Mass Effect’s revival

Developers aim for the mature tone of the originals

Mass Effect 5 Normandy Ocean City

Luckily, it’s not all doom and gloom for fans of the popular sci-fi series, as the developers stated that they will continue with the more mature tone of the original Mass Effect trilogy, according to a post from BioWare’s executive producer, Michael Gamble in Andromeda Mass Effect catastrophe.

BioWare games have never shied away from bringing comedic moments into their franchises, but what made them work so well was putting serious characters in these situations to humanize them, providing moments of levity in an otherwise dark world. Although it is not the perfect sequel to the Dragon Age franchise, BioWare moved forward with Veilguard’s complete lack of microtransactions, making it one less thing to worry about Mass Effect fans.

Although it is unfortunate for fans of the latest Dragon Age installment, BioWare stated that it plans to direct all of its focus to the next Mass Effect game immediately, rather than creating additional content for Dragon Age: The Veil Guard, even bringing in talents who worked on the original Mass Effect trilogy.
