Uzumaki anime release date revealed in trailer that promises Junji Ito’s greatest anime adaptation yet

Junji Ito Fans have known all along that an anime adaptation of Uzumaki would be the biggest, most anticipated release of all his work, and thanks to a new trailer, fans won’t have to wait long. Uzumaki is a limited anime series, slated to release four pulse-pounding episodes depicting Junji Ito’s most famous supernatural and body horror work. The anime promises to be the veteran mangaka’s biggest adaptation yet, and it’s clear the long wait is increasingly worth it, at least from the trailer glimpses alone. Spirals and their mystical properties are explored, obsessed over and chillingly displayed in terrifying extremes in the Uzumaki anime, and it might be the most exciting horror anime in years.

Uzumaki gets right what other Junji Ito anime have gotten wrong

Production value is the tip of the iceberg

Spiraling eyes in Junji Ito's Uzumaki

Although many of Junji Ito’s previous adaptations appear in anthology collections of his short stories, Uzumaki is considered his magnum opus, so an anime adaptation would need a stellar release to set itself apart. This is not to say that his other anime are bad; Junji Ito’s anime adaptations sometimes have abrupt endings with very short stories, but they are quite faithful to his manga, which often have dark or ambiguous endings that are far from happy. But from the trailer alone, the animation is smooth, the music is decent, and most crucially, it renders everything in monochrome.

The result is an Uzumaki Anime that addresses the troubling flaws of adding color to an art style that thrives so strongly on its grayscale imagery. It’s a theme that has been explored in other adaptations, such as the animated manga fan adaptation of Berserk. Uzumaki’s Anime is highly anticipated, so a proper, chilling rendition of the horrors that have been shown in art galleries with Ito’s name, needs to be done justice.

Uzumaki is not only Junji Ito’s best anime, it might be the best horror anime in recent years

A genre that sometimes goes under represented

While anime is able to thrive with horror touches or secondary themes with the genre, such as Chainsaw man, Attack on Titan, dark assembly, Or Made in the abyssFewer recent anime have done as well as Strictly Horror Tales. Given that it’s a three-volume manga adapted against Junji Ito’s other relatively short stories, it’s clear that Uzumaki has the potential to be more widely discussed than other contemporary Junji Ito adaptations. With video games and feature films thriving in the horror genre, Uzumaki Rightfully deserves a hit anime series.
