Marvel Finals met for the first time, as Avengers tradition gets a major reboot. Launching in 2023, Marvel’s Ultimate Universe is a new continuity where familiar heroes receive radical makeovers. The new brand centers on Tony Stark’s Ultimates – a ragtag group of heroes who rebel against the villainous Maker, who has warped the timeline of this reality to deliver victory to the world’s evildoers and establish himself as the planet’s unquestioned ruler.
Now, The Ultimates unite for the first time to face the Creator’s deadliest lieutenant, the Legendary Hulk. Until now, the team has worked in units, recruiting other heroes to build an international alliance. In a preview of THE Finals #6the full team comes together for the first time (minus Doom, who is conducting experiments to recreate the murdered Fantastic Four), revealing which heroes are considered members of this history-making group’s first true roster.
Teaming up for a rescue mission, the team is drawn into battle with the Hulk and his gamma-enhanced minions, the Immortal Weapons. Fortunately, Tony brought the entire cast of the team, as every member will be needed to win.
The Ultimates unite to fight the legendary Hulk
Tony Stark leads a new reimagining of the Avengers
Earth-6160 was once just another world in the Marvel multiverse, until the Creator chose it as his base of operations. With exact knowledge of the Marvel timeline, the Creator rewrote history to create a secret conspiracy of villains, each ruling a different territory, plunging the world into a cycle of constant war and oppression. In Secret Invasionwhich introduced this new canon, the Creator was trapped in his laboratory for two years, giving the heroes the chance to destroy his power base before returning.
In his absence, the Creator was replaced as the in fact leader of the council of villains of Bruce Banner’s legendary Hulk – a version of the Green Goliath corrupted by the Creator. This Hulk is the leader of a cult known as the Children of Eternal Light, and performed horrific experiments in the Pacific, creating the new She-Hulk. After the Ultimates injured Hulk’s fellow lieutenant Captain Britain and killed the council slave ‘President’ Midas, the Legendary Hulk finally decided to start taking them seriously.
However, this Hulk is not a mindless monster – he is a ruthless strategist who is ready to face the Ultimates with the Immortal Weapons. In mainstream Marvel continuity, the Immortal Weapons are some of the greatest martial artists in the world. They appear to maintain this distinction in Ultimate continuity, but are now enhanced by the Hulk’s gamma energy.
This is the first time the Ultimates have come together, and the choice of mission recreates a crucial part of the Avengers’ history.

Your guide to Marvel’s new God-tier team
Facing the Immortal Weapons is Tony Stark’s team of heroes, with each Avengers icon with a very different story thanks to the Creator’s adulteration. The initial alliance that started the Ultimates was between teenage Tony Stark and Doom – a version of Reed Richards from the Fantastic Four who was mercilessly tortured by the Creator, who also sabotaged the experimental space flight that he must they turned the FF into superheroes. Meanwhile, the Creator ensured that Captain America was never thawed after his apparent death in World War II, and Thor was imprisoned on Asgard after Loki rose to power.

Other heroes are much newer to the crime-fighting life. Tony tried to reach heroes whose lives were rewritten by the Creator, preventing them from gaining powers. While some heroes like Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel and Clint Barton’s Hawkeye were unwilling or unable to join the fight, others like Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne accepted the return of their powers, while Captain America led a mission to ransom to recruit America Chavez, notably sacrificing innocent lives in the process. The new Hawkeye is unique to the team because they adopted Hawkeye’s equipment and codename after Tony tried and failed to recruit the original.with Tony worried that his psychological profile is not suited to a life of heroism.
The information requested by Marvel made it clear that at least one of the Ultimates will die in the next fight.
Finally, there’s Jim Hammond’s Human Torch – a World War II android who was kept as a trophy by the Creator and reactivated by Steve Rogers. Fans haven’t seen much of Jim in action, but he’s a surprising recruit given his relative lack of fame in the mainstream Marvel canon. Notably, the missing heroes include Spider-Man and Black Panther. Each of these heroes has their own End print titles, but presumably haven’t yet been asked by Tony to join the Ultimates – likely because Peter isn’t ready and Black Panther is already embroiled in a war against the Hulk’s ally Moon Knight.
Ultimates recreates a pivotal moment in Avengers history
But this time, not everyone will survive
Marvel has refrained from uniting the entire Ultimates cast until now, making this their first official fight as a team. This is likely part of an effort to echo the iconic Avengers #1and the crucial story that the team first comes together to fight the Hulk who (in the classic Stan Lee and Jack Kirby edition) is under the control of Loki and quickly joins the team. This was also the case in original Ultimate Universe brand from the 2000s, where the team’s first official villain was a cannibalistic version of the Hulk.
However, there is a huge difference between any of these stories – The information requested by Marvel made it clear that at least one of the Ultimates will die in the next fight. It’s a mystery who will fall, but it will be the team’s first defeat in a war for the fate of the planet. THE Finals‘first battle as team began, rewriting Avengers lore with a surprise death as they face off against the Hulk and hopefully land a decisive blow against the Creator.
The Ultimates #6 is available November 6 from Marvel Comics.
