He revealed what he was most afraid of when he signed on for Twisters And how the cast bonded off-camera, which translated to chemistry in the movie. Perea also shared insight into the filming process and reflected on a terrifying moment on set during the filming process.
Brandon Perea details his craziest Twister filming experiences
Screen Rating: Twisters is such an iconic film. I mean, the original Twister is also such an iconic film. Truly one of the best disaster movies ever created. This is right in the footsteps. What is something you learned about tornadoes that you didn’t know before?
Brandon Perea: Oh, one thing I learned is the wind direction of the circular motion starts from the earth to meet the sky. This is something I learned. I hope I said that right. But yeah, I just didn’t know. I thought that it would always just come down, but I didn’t know that it also starts from low, where the wind can circle and handle.
Well, you guys have to go to boot camp to learn all that stuff, right?
Brandon Perea: Yes. Meteorology Bootcamp.
Do you think you could be a weatherman at this point?
Brandon Perea: No for sure. Yes, no.
Now I know the last time we talked, you said there were a lot of crazy experiences because you guys were shooting in tornado season during that time. Can you talk about one of the craziest experiences you’ve had on set with Twisters?
Brandon Perea: Oh man. There was a moment where we had a lightning delay, so everyone had to take cover and go inside. So there was a point where I was in my trailer and I’m looking at the weather map that I have and I see this massive storm on the map.
And then I start to feel my trailer shake really bad. It wasn’t like a little subtle, it was like I was like, dude, am I about to pass out? And I start texting production like, hey, is there actually a tornado because I won’t leave my trailer, but what’s protocol right now? Because I feel like I’m about to die. But it was all safe at the end of the day. But our pace was spoiled.
Brandon Perea shares his jean jacket theory from Kane
This is absurd. Now, one thing I love about home entertainment releases. So with these films, if you have to choose another film to pair to make a double feature at home, not including the first TwisterWhat would you pair with Twisters?
Brandon Perea: No.
Oh, good answer. There you go.
Brandon Perea: No and Twisters!
What’s the craziest fan theory you’ve ever heard of No? I’ve had a few myself, but what’s the craziest?
Brandon Perea: Dude, I did one print thing where it was me, Daniel, Kiki, Steven and Jordan, and there were some crazy theories. It was before the release and I think I read some fanfiction today, of just people trying to break down the Gordy scene and it’s hilarious. There are so many different things, but my theory is where are the family members of Jean Jacket?
I think Jean Jackett might be an actual angel because it’s the Bible verse in the quote at the beginning that we’re talking about this stuff, but I think it’s an actual angel that was prophesied. That’s just my fan theory there.
Brandon Perea: This angel is killing people, man. It is a monster. Who is a good angel? We have a demon. Jean Jacket is a demon!
Brandon Perea teases an incredible Twisters deleted scene
“I think our tornado creation process should be there.”
This is a good point. well, Look back to Twisters. I love home releases because I almost feel like it’s a bit like going to film school. You get to learn about the behind-the-scenes process. What features do you expect to be in the home entertainment release?
Brandon Perea: I think our tornado creation process should be there. Blooper stuff is hilarious. We had a blast making this movie. It’s a fun movie. We had a fun group of people and everyone was just having a ball while we were making it, and there were times when we were just really goofing off during serious moments.
And yes, there are some hilarious behind the scenes and some deleted scenes too. I have one of the deleted scenes and I’m so proud that it’s in here and you have to see it at home, but it’s an incredible scene. I love it. I’m sad it wasn’t the final one, but I’m so glad it’s seeing the light of day. I thought I would never be able to see it.
Oh, this is unbelievable. That’s the great thing about home entertainment releases. Now, I was talking to Katie O’Brien at Comic-Con and I see that your cast for Twisters was very, very close. You guys were cheering each other on, rooting each other on. Can you talk about the camaraderie you guys built on-camera and off-camera together?
Brandon Perea: For sure, yes. I mean, we had so much fun on set, of course, but what was great about filming in Oklahoma also, we were in OKC, but it was all in close quarters. So everyone eats at the same restaurants, everyone goes to the same movies. Every time you go somewhere, you run into someone in the cast and it’s like, what are you doing? Not much. You want to hang out? Yes, sure.
So we all have to naturally hang out. We’re not filming in Los Angeles where everyone can just go home and get on with their normal lives. It was like we’re either in the hotel or we’re kicking it, so what’s up? So yeah, I think it was cool to bond there so we could bring it to set and then just have fun. We have so much trust from Lee Isaac Chung as well, the director, to just trust us to go balls to the wall.
How Brandon Perea handled the stress of life up to Twister
“My fear was after Philip Seymour Hoffman’s performance.”
I want to talk about Lee Isaac Chung for a second because one of the things he talked about was how intimidated he was taking on a project like this. One great part about this movie is running to your fears. So how did you approach your fears in the film?
Brandon Perea: My fear was after the performance of Philip Seymour Hoffman because yes, I remember when I first read the script, I didn’t know what role I was going for and then I saw the Boon guy and I laughed at his lines. And then I just remember thinking, oh, the poor guy, why does he have to play? That’s a lot of weight to carry.
And then cut to a few weeks later, I get offered the bun roll and I was like, oh my god, I’m the poor bastard. It’s me. I have to carry the weight. Dang it. So you manage on the scale of a legacy and then a legacy actor. This is one of the greatest of all time. And yes, I just wanted to give some sort of fun energy, a little bit of what Philip Seymour Hoffman gave, and I hope I do some justice. It’s a lot of weight to carry.
It’s crazy because a lot of your cast members, Katie O’Brien, she was in Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumamania. You have Glen Powell, who is fantastically just about every superhero under the sun. We heard his comments about wanting to have a different take on Batman. David Corenswet got the role of Superman when he was working with her. If a superhero comes your way, what are you putting your energy into?
Brandon Perea: I will say I learned a lot from my Nope press stuff, right? I am not going to fight for any character. Whoever sees me as a character, cool, I’ll do it. I believe in my abilities as an actor. I have shown my abilities as an actor and I have crazy abilities outside of acting when it comes to the stunt world. I showed it and now I will not ask for any role.
Who can see and you see the vision, I tell you, you will get the best version of yourself and you will seem like a genius. So there is no universe I am fighting to anything anymore, whatever, leaving it to God and to the people who are ready to believe in me and have faith based on what I have been able to showcase. Man, I’m telling you, I’m going crazy. You know what I’m saying? I would go ballistic, but I’m not asking for it. It is there.
Brandon Perea reminisces about the shenanigans the Twisters cast got up to on set
“We are cracking into our own bits.”
Another thing I love about home entertainment releases is audio commentary. What is your favorite DVD commentary? What did you learn the most from any DVD commentary out there?
Brandon Perea: I think it’s just the fun behind filmmaking. I think outside perspective of it, you just never know what’s going on. Even in twisters, right? There are some serious moments that we deal with, but in between the names, we cringe.
We are cracking up during our own bits. And then it’s like, okay guys, guys tie it together. We have to get serious. ok guys? But then when only one person looks into the eyes of the castle, it’s like, Mother Bloom, aren’t you airing now? We shoot on film. We can’t waste a name. But yeah, I think just as much fun. I think that’s what’s cool to learn from him.
Now the last question I have for you is that I am so glad I got to experience this movie in an IMAX screen. I felt like I was in the movie. For real, you feel like you are immersed in the film when you shoot the crazy epic, giant disaster scenes. Can you talk about what’s going on on set? Can you share any fun stories behind this?
Brandon Perea: We have big jet engine fans blowing on us, and then we have dirt being thrown at us from the fan. And then we have someone with a rocket full of ice. So he’s launching ice at us, and then we have the rain come down and we’re in the middle of Oklahoma on the field.
So that’s just to create the feeling. So I call it controlled chaos because it’s a chaotic moment, but it’s in a controlled environment. And yes, it’s just cool too, I’m happy and grateful for production that they really wanted to make the actors feel like we’re in chaos.
