Transformers’ new Energon universe excites me for Megatron’s return

THE Energon Universe has been going strong for over a year, and Skybound’s shared universe between Transformers and GI Joe shows no signs of slowing down. The publisher has just released a new trailer teasing the upcoming stories of Void Rivals, Transformers and the new GI Joe ongoing series, and I, for one, couldn’t be more excited.

Releasing the trailer in InstagramSkybound has crafted a compelling look at all three ongoing titles in the Energon Universe.

To be fair, it doesn’t look like the trailer is offering any new art from any future story. But it’s hard to watch this and not get excited. The Energon Universe has several story threads, so I think this is the one perfect time to catch everyone up on what’s going on Void Rivals, Transformers and the GI Joe comics.

The Energon Universe has built a saga around surprise connections between Transformers and GI Joe

Jetfire’s appearance in Void Rivals Will fall like a Transformers Emphasis

Comic panel: A close-up of Jetfire asking where he is.

I write a lot about the Energon Universe, but honestly, the reason I’m compelled to write so much about Skybound’s new brand is because the books are just that good. Each new edition creates buzz and excitement across the board, and All this buzz goes back to the moment when Void Rivals #1, by Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici, released summer 2023. Jetfire’s surprise reveal at the end of the issue confirmed rumors that Skybound had acquired the Transformers & GI Joe licenses from Hasbro, and the surprise was worth it.

Although connections with the largest Transformers franchise were smaller at the beginning, Rivals of the Void’ the story grew…

Unfortunately, the reveal ended up being spoiled for me before I had a chance to read the first issue of Void Rivalsbut in the end it didn’t matter. The sudden appearance of Jetfire still worked its magic for me, especially in the way it established the promise of the Energon Universe. Telling the story of two cultures at war in a collapsing world on the edge of a Black Hole known as the Sacred Ring, Void Rivals stars two warriors from opposite sides of the war, Darak and Solila, who find themselves forced to work together to survive.

Although connections with the largest Transformers franchise were smaller at the beginning, Rivals of the Void’ the story has grown to the point that it encompasses the origin of Cybertron itself. As Darak and Solila continued their journey, they learned that their two warring cultures are derived from Cybertronian technology and are linked in some way to the mysterious Zerta-Trion, an entirely new character created for the Energon Universe who supposedly left Cybertron a long time ago. In the most exciting reveal yet, Void Rivals also heavily teased that Unicron is at the center of the Black Hole surrounding the Sacred Ring, setting up a major plot to come.

The Energon Universe weaves perfectly GI Joe & Transformers Together

Hasbro’s long-running franchises have rarely been better

Launch of the new course Transformers The series was another landmark moment for the Energon Universe, and I must say that I considered Daniel Warren Johnson’s reinterpretation of the franchise to be the best version ever seen. Along with artists Jorge Corona and Jason Howard Johnson’s vision for Transformers It was a success both critically and financiallyand a large part of this is due to a story that surprises readers at every turn. After Jetfire’s first appearance, the Autobots and Decepticons are awakened on Earth, restarting their war on a world filled with Energon.

While Optimus Prime returned with a small group of Autobots, Megatron was nowhere to be found, leading Starscream to assume leadership of the Decepticons. After a disastrous battle for the Ark, Soundwave took over Starscream’s leadership position and managed to contact fellow Decepticon Shockwave on Cybertron. The two established a bridge between Cybertron and Earth, even bringing the The Transformers’ homeworld in Earth’s orbit. Shockwave was narrowly defeated by Prime and the Autobots, but a piece of Cybertron was left behind, which will likely lead to several EU stories.

This leads us to GI Joe corner of the Energon Universe, which began with the introduction of one Conrad “Duke” Hauser in Transformers #2. I remember the excitement I felt when I saw Duke appear in the pages of Transformersand the Energon Universe did not disappoint when it came to bringing the True American Heroes into the new continuity. Duke’s breathless encounter with Starscream led to the character embarking on a quest in his own self-titled miniseries from Joshua Williamson and Tom Reilly, which saw the future leader Joe heading away to uncover the mystery behind these space-transforming robots.

In this new Transformers and GI Joe Shared Universe, it’s all about Energon

The new continuity revolves around valuable resources

THE Duke the miniseries ended with the official formation of the GI Joe team, but the Real American Heroes are just one side of the coin. Cobra Commander by Williamson and Andrea Milana focused on Cobra’s rise in the EUfollowing the title character as he searches the world for the Transformers’ valuable power source. The miniseries reveals the origins of the Commander in the new continuity, inspired by the 80s cartoon by linking his origins to the hidden society of Cobra-La. We learn that the Commander was a top scientist working for the snakemen, who derived Energon-based weapons from a captive Megatron.

Cobra Commander ends with the title character breaking away from Cobra-La and founding his own army: the official formation of the terrorist organization Cobra. The hidden society of snakemen is not completely out of the picture, as Cobra-La has sent his forces into space to wage war on Cybertron. In Energon Universe 2024 Special #1 – By All Top EU Creators – Megatron escapes from Cobra-La’s prison, and the Decepticon leader is currently at large. THE Scarlett and Destroy the miniseries continued to flesh out the world of the new GI Joeintroducing us to the Arashikage ninja clan in Japan and the underground arms race.

After almost a year of preparation, GI Joe #1 by Williamson and Reilly recently debuted, and the sky is the limit for the latest Energon Universe title. In addition to introducing new characters like Risk, the new series also features the first official battle between the Joes and Cobra Cobra Commander seeks to recover a piece of fallen Cybertron fragment from the US government. This battle led to the death of a major character, ending with a cliffhanger that left me angry at the passage of time, making the next month an agonizing wait to see what happens next.

The imminent battle between Cobra-La and Cybertron, the arrival of Unicron in Void Rivalsthe imminent return of Megatron… the Energon Universe is certainly not short of outstanding stories.
