Top 10 Questions From Sony's Spider-Man Universe We May Never Get Answers To, Now The Franchise Is Over

After the release of Kraven the Hunter, Sony's Spider-Man Universe as we know, it is coming to an end, which leaves many questions unanswered and loose ends unexplored. Originally planned to be connected to Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man duology, SSU became its own entity with the release of 2018 Poison. Despite its name, Sony's Marvel film franchise featured some of Marvel Comics' biggest Spider-Man villains, but not the wall-crawler himself, who was introduced in the MCU, but this may have contributed to the franchise's downfall.

Despite starting strong with an impressive box office total of $856.1 million for PoisonSony's Spider-Man universe generated too many disappointments to be profitable. Half of his six feature films were critical and commercial failures, including Kraven the Hunterwhich put the final nail in the coffin of the SSU very recently. Scripts, visual effects, acting quality and repetitive narratives were heavily criticized, culminating in Sony shifting its focus to its most successful Spider-Man projects, but this means we may never get answers to some of SSU's most burning questions.

What happens to Michael Keaton's Vulture now?

The Vulture Appeared At SSU In Morbius

Michael Keaton first appeared as Adrian Toomes' Vulture, one of Spider-Man's most iconic villains in Marvel Comics, in 2017. Spider-Man: Homecomingwhich happened in the main continuity of the MCU. Toomes was incarcerated at the end of the Phase 3 film, where he was seen in 2022 Morbiusbut SSU's lackluster film completely confused Toomes' plot. Somehow, inexplicably, Toomes was sent from the MCU across the multiverse by Doctor Strange's spell in late 2021. Spider-Man: No Way Homebut this broke the spell's own rules.

Doctor Strange's memory-wiping spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home erased everyone's memories of Peter Parker, sending the film's multiversal villains back to their own realities after being rehabilitated. The Vulture belonged to the MCU, so it never made sense for him to be sent to the SSU. Now that SSU has come to an end, the fate of Michael Keaton's Vulture is uncertain. There have been calls for him to return to the MCU, or at least be referenced in the Marvel Studios film. Spider-Man 4recounting your confused Morbius plot.

Did Venom survive the events of the Last Dance?

Venom sacrificed himself at the end of Venom: The Last Dance

2024 Venom: The Last Dance closed the Poison trilogy, which has always been Sony's most successful SSU franchise. Although The last dance had its problems and didn't do as well as its two predecessors, the film wrapped up Eddie Brock and Venom's story well, providing them with a satisfying and emotional ending. To take down the Xenophages and ensure that Knull could not be freed from his prison on Klyntar, Venom teamed up with the monsters and doused himself in acid.killing him and the Xenophages and saving the universe.

This appeared to be Venom's official ending, which in itself was shocking. Venom is one of Marvel's most popular properties, so his death in October 2024 perhaps signified the fact that Sony would end its Marvel film franchise. Even so, Venom: The Last Dance post-credits scene teased the possibility of Venom's survival, as we were shown a cockroach near an empty vial that contained a small piece of the Venom symbiote. If Venom attached itself to the cockroach and gradually made its way to a new human host, its story could continue.

How do Julia Cornwall, Mattie Franklin and Anya Corazón get their spider powers?

Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor and Isabela Merced starred in Madame Web

Lady TeiaIt is currently the least successful and most criticized film in Sony's Spider-Man universe. There are few redeeming qualities in Lady Teiaalthough the introduction of the franchise's first Spider-Man, namely Sydney Sweeney's Julia Cornwall, Celeste O'Connor's Mattie Franklin, and Isabela Merced's Anya Corazón, was very exciting. Unfortunately, audiences only got a brief glimpse of these Spider-Women in action, as they defeated Ezekiel Sims in a premonitionbut his origin story was never shown on screen.

Mattie Franklin

Spider-Woman by Martha “Mattie” Franklin

Anya Corazón

Araña de Aña “Anya” Sofia Corazón

Incredible Fantasy #1 (2004)

Julia from Marvel Comics CarpenterMattie Franklin and Anya Corazón are three very powerful and exciting Spider-Womenso it was a shame that Lady Teia did not exploit them to their full potential. Madame Web the failure, SSU's biggest, made it very unlikely that these Spider-Women would ever have been revisited in any way. Now that SSU has come to an end, that's even harder to imagine, although the door may be open for new actors to reinvent these brilliant Marvel roles alongside Tom Holland's Spider-Man in the MCU.

7

Is Martine Bancroft a vampire?

Martine Bancroft ingested Michael Morbius' blood

Adria Arjona debuted as Martine Bancroft in Morbiusintroduced as scientific colleague and friend of Jared Leto's Michael Morbius. Unfortunately, her character wasn't given justice in the embarrassing 2022 film, but it's possible that future SSU films could have given her a more substantive role. After being fed by Morbius and ingesting some of his vampiric blood, Martine Bancroft herself was teased for becoming a vampire when she was resurrected at the end of Morbius with red eyesteasing his larger role in the future of the franchise.

It appears that this will no longer come to fruition, although it is possible that a reinvention of Morbius, the Living Vampire, in the MCU could also come with a new version of Martine Bancroft. In Marvel Comics, Morbius and Bancroft are lovers, while the latter was also involved with Jack Russell's Werewolf by Night and even became an ally of Peter Parker's Spider-Man, culminating in his death. It's a shame that Morbius didn't do her justice, especially with Arjona in the roleso it would be great for Marvel Studios to remake Martine Bancroft.

6

How did Shriek get his powers?

Shriek is a powerful mutant in Marvel comics

In the same way as Martine Bancroft, Venom: Let There Be Carnage Frances Barrison, aka Shriek, is another formidable female Marvel character who was completely lost in SSU. The 2021 film directed by Andy Serkis had its pros and cons, and Naomie Harris gave a brilliant performance as Shriek, but she was nothing more than a supporting character to Tom Hardy and Woody Harrelson's leads. In Marvel comics, Shriek is a powerful mutant villain, but of course Sony couldn't use that term in SSUso I just completely ignored Shriek's backstory.

The opening of Venom: Let There Be Carnage revealed that Frances Barrison and Cletus Kasady lived at the St. Estes Home for Unwanted Children before Barrison was taken to the Ravencroft Institute. Barrison already had his powers in St. Estes, but Let there be carnage did not reveal how she came to be or what her life was like before. It is unlikely that this will be explored in subsequent projects, as Shriek was apparently killed beneath the collapsing cathedral during Let there be carnage final battle.

5

Where are Teddy Paine and Agony?

The Agony Was Poison: The Few Surviving Symbiotes of the Last Dance

Venom: The Last Dance may have ended the story of Eddie Brock and Venom, but it may also have started the narrative of a new symbiote known as Agony. Agony teamed up with Juno Temple's Teddy Paine during The last danceof final battle, and remained attached to the Area 51 scientist even after escaping the battlefield. Unfortunately, With no future projects announced for SSU and Sony's shift in focus, it appears Teddy Paine and Agony's relationship ended just when it truly began.which is a terrible shame.

Agony was forcibly generated by the Venom Symbiote in Marvel Comics in 1993 and used by the sinister Life Foundation. The new Symbiote could have become much more of a hero in the SSU, however, as Agony was seen fighting alongside Venom against the Xenophages during Venom: The Last Dance final battle. Juno Temple was an exciting addition to Poison: The Last Dance cast and helped make the film a hit in Sony's dwindling Marvel franchise, but she's unlikely to be seen again.

4

Will Knull find a way to free himself?

Knull Teased His Return in Venom: The Last Dance's Mid-Credits Scene

Knull was one of the most compelling additions to Sony's Spider-Man universe during Venom: The Last DanceBut the live-action future of the terrifying supervillain is now in danger. The last dance revealed Knull's backstory, which remained relatively close to his Marvel Comics history, although it omitted everything to do with the Celestials, Knowhere, and All-Black, who were seen in the MCU proper but were still implied. The last dance ended with Knull teasing his return, but it's now unclear when that might happen.

Portrayed by Venom: Let There Be Carnage Director Andy Serkis, Knull is a formidable threat in Marvel Comics, but that has yet to be seen in live-action. As a multiversal villain, there has been speculation that Knull could move into the MCU after Venom: The Last Danceperhaps facing off against Tom Holland's Spider-Man and a new version of Venom. It's unclear how Knull could break free from his prison now that Venom is dead in the SSU.and it is even less clear when this could be explored.

3

Is Venom now in the MCU?

A piece of poison was left in the MCU in Spider-Man: No Way Home

Although Venom: The Last Dance may have ended with Venom sacrificing himself to save Eddie Brock and the entire universe from Knull, this may not be the end for Venom. During Spider-Man: No Way Home In the mid-credits scene, it was revealed that Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock was brought into the MCU universe and was sent home by Doctor Strange's spell, but Venom left a piece of his symbiote form on the MCU's Earth-616. This sets Venom up perfectly for a more important role in the MCU's future outside of SSU, but that hasn't yet been confirmed.

A piece of the Venom Symbiote existing in the MCU should be a big deal, but this piece hasn't been seen or mentioned in the three years since Spider-Man: No Way Home. Is it possible that the next MCU Spider-Man 4 could finally solve the problem by officially bringing Venom into the MCU, but until then, this is just another big unanswered question tied to the SSU. Venom may be dead in SSU, but he may still be alive in the MCUalthough it will still be a few years before we get a definitive answer.

2

What's next for Kraven the Hunter?

Kraven the Hunter is the last SSU film

Almost a decade after his debut as Pietro Maximoff's Quicksilver in 2015 Avengers: Age of UltronAaron Taylor-Johnson brought the iconic Kraven the Hunter to live action for the first time. Unfortunately, Kraven the Hunter is performing as poorly as everyone expected from the latest and apparently final SSU film. This is a shame, as Taylor-Johnson's portrayal of Sergei Kravinoff is truly admirable, even though he never gets the chance to actually become the Manhunter portrayed in Marvel Comics.

There have been calls for Aaron Taylor-Johnson to reprise the role of Kraven the Hunter in the MCU's upcoming multiversal crossover events., Avengers: Judgment Day and Avengers: Secret Wars. It's unclear if that will happen, so the future is uncertain for Kravinoff. This is especially disappointing since 2024 Kraven the Hunter ended with Kravinoff fully embracing his identity as the Manhunter, and perhaps setting himself up to be an antihero turned more morally ambiguous villain, which may have perfectly prepared him to fight a wall-crawler like Spider-Man .

1

Where is Spider-Man?

Spider-Man never appeared in SSU

Among the plethora of criticisms hurled at SSU throughout its six-year history, the biggest concern of all was that the franchise never introduced its own version of Spider-Man. This seemed strange because Many questioned how a franchise called Sony's Spider-Man Universe could avoid bringing Spider-Man into the fold.especially when many of the franchise's main characters simply don't work without a Spider-Man to fight. It was recently revealed that Sony could have used Tom Holland's Spider-Man as well as him appearing in the MCU, but that didn't happen.

Instead, the only glimpse audiences got of Spider-Man at SSU was when Emma Roberts' Mary Parker gave birth to Peter Parker in Lady Teia. Unfortunately, this inclusion only made the SSU schedule even more confusing, as Lady Teia was defined in 2003, which means it would have been operating for several years when Morbius, Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven the Hunter rolled. Spider-Man's absence was a big trap for Sony's Spider-Man Universeand it now seems that we may never be properly introduced to this franchise's version of Peter Parker.
