Tom Welling's Superman gets a fun, retro '80s update with some stylish DC art, showing what the character might have looked like in a different time. Smallville is one of the longest-running Superman adaptations, with Tom Welling as Clark Kent being one of the biggest reasons for its success. The series ran for 10 seasons, making it the longest-running superhero television show ever made. However, Welling has never been seen wearing Superman's iconic costume.
Despite never being fully shown in the hero's costume, Tom Welling joined a long and famous list of actors to play Superman, with a version of the character that is all his own. Artist Buffyville2 reimagine what Tom Welling's Superman and several other characters from Smallville might have looked like if the show took place in the 1980srather than the early to mid 2000s, when the series actually takes place.
What 80s Smallville Art Means
Tom Welling's Clark Kent never got to fully be Superman during Smallville's run, even though the character went through the same trials and tribulations that a fully realized Superman would have to go through at some point. Still, it would have been nice to see Tom Welling in full action as Superman instead of just Clark Kent. This fan art does just that, albeit with a 1980s-inspired twist, imagining what he would have looked like back then.
Complete with a VHS aesthetic, the artwork showcases a series of Smallville characters from that 1980s setting. Alongside Superman, characters such as Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Brainiac and Supergirl were reimagined. Luthor looks right at home in his impressive business suit, while Braniac's two different looks are frightening interpretations of the character.
