Gates McFadden does the best he can with the material, but “Sub Rosa” isn’t one of Dr. Crusher’s best moments. The plot does not benefit Crusher and the women in her family, implying that many of them were victims of Ronin. Although “Sub Rosa” has some truly creepy visuals, it ultimately fails as both a ghost story and a novel. Even Gates McFadden expressed her disdain for the episode, admitting that it didn’t make much sense for Crusher as a character. Additionally, the story never makes sense or has any significant impact on anything aboard the Enterprise.
