Frasier Season 2 Episode 9 may have permanently ended talk of a romance between Frasier Crane and Roz Doyle. The idea of Frasier and Roz getting together goes back to the original show. By their very nature as two close characters in a sitcom, the show naturally toyed with the idea (though not to the same degree as Niles Crane and Daphne Moon), although it mostly seemed to opt to keep them friends. However, there were some exceptions.
Frasier Season 7 Episode 18, ‘Hot Pursuit’, explored the sexual tension between them while sharing a hotel room. So finally, they slept together in season 9, as seen in episode 23, “The Guilt Trippers”, but they both regretted it. When Peri Gilpin returned as part of the Frasier With the reboot cast in the first season, the show toyed with the idea even more, perhaps suggesting that, decades later, now might be the time for them to give it a real try. This seemed possible later Frasier the Season 1 finale, but as the reboot approaches the Season 2 finale, it’s completely scrapped.
Frasier’s new girlfriend certainly puts an end to the conversation about him and Roz being a couple
Patricia Heaton’s Holly is a great addition
2nd season of Frasier the reboot featured Holly, played by Patricia Heaton, in episode 2, “Cyrano, Cyrano”, as a bartender working at a hotel on Valentine’s Day. The witty banter between them showed flashes of attraction, and it paid off in episode 9, ‘Murder Most Finch,’ which reveals Frasier continued visiting the bar, developing a deeper connection with Holly, and the two are now dating..
In a way, there is an element of Roz in Holly. She is Frasier’s equal in terms of intelligence, but is someone who is also able to put him in his place and doesn’t have the same pretentious nature, which stands out really well and highlights how ridiculous he can be at times. It’s still early days in their relationship, but they clearly really like each other and there’s a sign that things could move quickly. Holly immediately feels like she belongs among Frasier’s friends and family, and Heaton is a fantastic addition to the cast who deserves to stick around for a long time.
There’s no point in bringing Holly in if the plan is for Frasier to eventually hook up with Roz, since they could have already done that…
Although Frasier has had his fair share of failed relationships, the fact that he is dating someone who is quite different and balances him out could be a perfect match. And with that, there’s really no need for a romance with Roz, even if she herself is becoming a more regular figure in the reboot. Likewise, there’s no point bringing in Holly if the plan is for Frasier to eventually hook up with Roz, as they could have already done that, and also flirted with – and downplayed – the idea in the Cape Cod issue.
Frasier and Roz are much better off as friends than as a couple
A romance between them never made sense
Ultimately, it’s a good thing that FrasierThe reboot is moving away from a romance between Frasier and Roz. Their friendship is one of the best parts of the original showand that continued to shine in the reboot with Gilpin’s increased presence. In fact, they are more like brother and sister, fighting with each other, gently teasing each other, but also always there for each other no matter what. A romance would fundamentally alter that and risk breaking him forever if things went wrong.
It’s much more interesting for Frasier to have different types of relationships, and it would fall into a boring comedy trope by pairing the main character with his friend. That would be even worse now, as the show already proved a long time ago that they shouldn’t be together and probably wouldn’t work together, at least not for long. THE Frasier the reboot could have easily leaned into the nostalgia factor of a Roz romance, but Holly is a much better choice.
