With the new version of the DC Universe of Superman around the corner, I can't help but reflect on Henry Cavill's tenure and how one scene in particular makes me miss the old Man of Steel. The DC Universe is already underway with Creature Commands now in the air Max.but its live-action cinematic offerings will begin with James Gunn Superman on July 11, 2025. The release date falls a year and a half after the DCEU released its final film, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdomand almost three years since the announcement that Henry Cavill would no longer play the role.
Cavill's departure is indicative of DC Studios' intention to draw a line under the previous era. Barring a few exceptions, most of the DCEU cast will be replaced in the DCU as it adopts a new aesthetic and spirit. Arguably, none of these recasts pack as much punch as Henry Cavill, whose portrayal of Superman was among the most beloved aspects of the DCEU. The DCEU films Superman starred in may have been divisive, but many scenes demonstrate how well Cavill embodied the role.
Henry Cavill's Superman era is back in focus as the DCU begins
Fans are still calling for Cavill's return
Despite my confidence in David Corenswet after the first Superman teaser trailer, I know I'm not alone in mourning Cavill's departure. The biggest challenge facing Corenswet now, which so far appears to be portraying a particularly vulnerable version of Superman, is rising to the occasion of Henry Cavill's portrayal. Cavill has conveyed similar traits throughout his tenure, often appearing as a tortured soul, uncertain about his status as a nigh-invincible alien among the mortals he's tasked with protecting. His grounded portrayal explored how Superman would fit into a world not unlike our own, while also perfectly matching his physical attributes.
Cavill's celebrated portrayal of Kal-El raised the question of when and how he might return now this Superman is just around the corner. While Gunn is definitely drawing a line below the DCEU, the first hurdle for the new franchise to overcome is ensuring that its new main character can live up to the mantle like its predecessor. I bet a lot of this residual desire to see more of Cavill's Kal-El is due to the fact that he never got enough screen time in his own franchise.
Superman's Future Is Bright, But Henry Cavill Was Underutilized
Superman only had one solo film
Regardless of how Corenswet's Superman is received, James Gunn at least has the opportunity to capitalize on a DCEU misfire. Although both film franchises debuted with Superman, the DCU has the opportunity to make its main character much more prolific than its predecessor. Despite being a fan favorite of the DCEU cast, Superman was only front and center in his first DCEU film. Cavill shared his other main appearances with other members of the Justice League before the DCEU ended, causing fans of his character to mourn his general absence.

Over eight years, Superman has only appeared four times in the DCEU and once in a cameo (It showed his face, anyway). Two of these appearances were different versions of Justice Leaguewhile Batman v Superman it felt more like a Batman vehicle, as the Caped Crusader had yet to star in a solo film. Man of Steel may have divided audiences and critics, but I can't help but think that Man of Steel 2 could have helped change the fate of the DCEU before it was too late. Unfortunately, we can only reflect fondly on Man of Steelthe best scene.
This DCEU Superman scene was Henry Cavill's best
Henry Cavill looks incredibly powerful, but he's also calm and cooperative
For me, the DCU Superman The trailer successfully awakened the feeling of wonder that should be synonymous with the character. Its bright color scheme looks like it was taken straight from the comics, while several action-packed moments and mind-bending visuals promise plenty of spectacle. At the same time, I think Henry Cavill's grounded take on the Man of Steel stood out most in the Man of Steel scene that showed him surrendering to the US military. With a full contingent of ordnance pointed directly at him, Henry Cavill exuded a quiet confidence that showed he was truly indestructible.
Superman could decimate the world, but actively chooses to defend it. Henry Cavill, while looming unshakably over the power of the military, conveyed this perfectly in the scene. He surrenders to the military and accepts handcuffs, later telling Lois that he uses them to do his "captors" feel safe. He is untouchable and safe, but is willing to work with humanity on his terms.
I have no doubt that David Corenswet will perfectly embody that part of Superman that wants people to feel safe around him, as his argument for wearing shorts demonstrated.
I have no doubt that David Corenswet will perfectly embody that part of Superman that wants people to feel safe around him, as his argument for wearing shorts demonstrated. I'm also sure that his and James Gunn's knowledge and love of the character will manifest itself as one of the best interpretations of Superman on the big screen. However, this scene helps me understand why so many mourn the loss of Cavill.
