Seeing his grandson burn causes Edwin to slam on the brakes, telling Madeline she needs to operate without Alfie. While she perseveres without her grandson, even enlisting her husband’s help, it all comes to a head in episode 6 when the case causes Madeline to have a panic attack. At this point, Edwin convinces her that she needs to abandon the plan entirely.
