Matlock is having a huge success in its freshman season, but episode 6 highlights the biggest threat to its secret plan for revenge. Madeline Matlock is actually Madeline Kingston in the remake of Andy Griffith’s classic 1980s procedural. Matlock. Kathy Bates’ character has a secret plan to infiltrate Jacobson Moore, a prestigious law firm in New York City that she plans to hold responsible for the death of her daughter, Ellie. Madeline’s plan is firing on all cylinders. However, something has been silently slowing her down, episode after episode, and it’s been the Matlock the greatest challenge in history.

In Matlock episode 6, Madeline assists Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) in a case with Julian (Jason Ritter). THE Matlock the characters are retrying a tainted baby formula lawsuit that they lost the first time. “Sixteen Steps” reveals that the lawsuit caused tension between Olympia and Julian, leading to the decision to divorce during the trial of the case. Alfie becomes exhausted from helping Madeline with her revenge plan on top of his schoolwork. He even lies to his teacher, saying he’s sick, but really wants a free pass home to help his grandmother. Seeing his grandson burn causes Edwin to slam on the brakes, telling Madeline she needs to operate without Alfie. While she perseveres without her grandson, even enlisting her husband’s help, it all comes to a head in episode 6 when the case causes Madeline to have a panic attack. At this point, Edwin convinces her that she needs to abandon the plan entirely.

Edwin disagrees, begging his wife to give up and raise their grandson, claiming it is the best way to help Ellie after her death. The difference of opinion over Alfie’s involvement causes tension to surface. In episode 6, it becomes clear that Madeline and Edwin have conflicting ideologies about how to grieve. Still, other events will cause the couple to repeat their differences.
