Warning: contains spoilers Blood Hunters #3!A former supporting character in Spider-Man lore, Halloween Eve is quickly becoming a Marvel powerhouse – one that could rival the likes of Thor himself. Empowered by Limbo’s dark magic and a desire to prove herself, Hallows’ Eve has the spark to become one of Marvel’s most powerful beings. All that stands between her and divine power is the right Halloween mask.
Blood Hunters #3 – by Erica Schultz and Robert Gill – subtly reveals Eve’s growing potential. To save Dagger, Eve reveals her witch mask. a tool that instantly grants you the ability to use magic despite your lack of mystical knowledge.
Hallows’ Eve gains new powers whenever she wears different masks, and the witch mask transforms Eve into a powerful sorceress. Although Hallows’ Eve is a relatively new character (at least in her guise), her rapidly expanding abilities make her a truly powerful hero. Although she has to choose one at a time, Hallows’ Eve now has powers ranging from divine strength to literal magic. Eva’s many masks include:
- The ghost mask – Grants intangibility and invisibility
- The Mask of the Hulk – Grants Hulk-level physical strength
- Captain America’s mask – Grants super strength and Captain America’s shield
- Spider-Man’s mask – Grants all of Spider-Man’s web-slinging powers and abilities
Hallows’ Eve combines magical power with Hulk strength
Blood Hunters #3 – Erica Schultz, Robert Gill, Rain Beredo and Joe Caramagna
The love interest of Spider-Man clone Ben Reilly, Janine’s story originally ended with her turning herself in to the police to make up for past crimes. Janine did not appear in the comics for the next 25 years, but was eventually brought back by the Beyond Corporation to entice Ben Reilly to act as the company’s endorsed Spider-Man. Unfortunately, Ben Reilly faced tragedy, transforming into the villain Chasm. Desperate to find the power needed to regain their humanity, the pair traveled to Limbo to make a deal with the Goblin Queen, Madelyne Pryor.
Madelyne, seeing a reflection of her childhood in Janine and sensing Janine’s frustration at being unable to help Ben, offered him the same dark magical catalyst that originally gave the Jean Gray clone her mystical powers. Transformed to harness Limbo’s complicated magic, the newly reborn Hallows’ Eve has been gifted a bottomless bag of masks that grant her powers associated with the mask’s face. In Bloodhunters #3, it is revealed that a mask can grant Janine not only physical powers, but also knowledge of the mask’s object, including the ability to wield ancient magic.
Hallows Eve is as strong as Limbo’s infinite magic
Janine Godbe first debuted in Spider-Man: The Lost Years #1
Hallows’ Eve using the witch mask to teleport the Blood Hunters to safety shows a new level of her power, suggesting there is no real limit to her abilities. While becoming strong or developing spider powers is one thing, magic is nearly limitless in Marvel lore, depending on the user’s personal knowledge and mastery of the mystical arts. If Hallows’ Eve can call upon this deep knowledge of magic at will, then there is little she cannot accomplish. Hypothetically, Janine could pull on a mask of Thor, or Chthon, or even Eternity and instantly possess their full strength.
Like Hallows’ Eve, Janine is still relatively new to Marvel comics, having only made her retitled debut in 2022. However, the current potential of her possibly endless supply of transforming masks makes her a character fans should pay attention to. Marvel has made great strides in resurrecting other previous D-Listers like Hood and 8-Ball, but Hallows’ Eve already stands above them all. Although only time will tell what this magical anti-hero’s future will entail, Halloween EveHer mystical potential went far beyond her current fame, making her abilities more in line with Thor than a renamed character from the 90s.
Blood Hunters #3 is now available from Marvel Comics.
