Rub landed some impressive guest stars, and while Matthew Perry’s role as Murray Marks was one of his most memorable, it’s even better when his episode’s other casts are considered. Although best known for appearing in all 10 seasons of FriendsPerry also played other great characters that weren’t Chandler Bing. Even though none of his other personas were as iconic as his slick comedy persona, Perry was always proving that he was much more than a one-trick pony. Your brilliant Rub the performance would have stood out on its own, but the medical comedy made it even better.
A legend of the sitcom genre, Matthew Perry was no stranger to occasional appearances on other comedy shows. For example, Perry even met with colleagues Friends former student Courtney Cox at Cougar Citywith the pair engaging in a pseudo-romance arc. The installment wouldn’t have been as good if Cox had acted alongside any other actor. Rub I kind of borrowed that casting trick, but in a much more subtle way.
Matthew Perry’s uncle played old Murrary in “My Unicorn”
Old Murray has an off-screen family bond with Matthew Perry’s Scrubs character
One of the best jokes Rub Season 4, Episode 11, ‘My Unicorn’, is Perry’s character proving that his father gave him an old man’s name. When JD disagrees, Perry shouts, “Murray!“in the halls of Sacred Heart Hospital, only for several elderly men to emerge from their rooms in response. When JD accidentally triggers the horde of Murrays again a few moments later, he clarifies by explaining who he was speaking to,”the youngest Murray.” While most retreat to their rooms, Perry’s character comes face to face with Murray, who is believed to be the youngerdespite being 68 years old.
This Murray, who is probably the second youngest Murray in the episode, is played by Tony Perry – the Friends star’s real-life uncle. Without that curiosity, the moment is still hilarious. However, knowing that there is a familial bond between the two actors serves as a glimpse into the future of Perry’s career. Rub character. Tony Perry Didn’t Receive Many On-Screen Acting Creditsand Old Murray is just the second of five roles he has brought to life in films and TV shows. Most recently, he gave a voice performance in 2021 for Break with Sam Jay season 1, episode 6, “NAHSON”
Matthew Perry’s father also appears in the same episode of Scrubs
Murray’s adoptive father was played by the actor’s real father
“My Unicorn” allowed Rub to bring in two big guest stars at once. In addition to Perry’s uncle, the sitcom cast Matthew Perry’s father, John Bennett Perry, as Gregory Marks – Murray’s father. The on-screen chemistry and comedic timing between the two men is evident, and the father-son dynamic is understandably effortless. Unlike Tony Perry, John is an incredibly experienced actor/comedian which appeared in many projects before and after Rub.
