These Marvel Rivals stats should be a wake-up call

Marvel Rivals There's a serious problem, but hopefully some new statistics on the game's top-performing players will start to change some attitudes. Marvel Rivals is a hero shooter in the same vein as Surveillanceand while Rivals is apparently a huge success, yet faces some of the same problems that plagued Surveillance in its early days. At the moment, it doesn't appear that the developers are working on a specific solution for Rivals', then it will be up to the players to change the way they play to improve things.

As a team-based game, Marvel Rivals requires a certain level of cooperation between players. This also means that some players may need to fill less flashy roles for the good of their team. Unfortunately, many players seem unwilling to do so. However, new statistics collected since Rivals', the early December release will convince some players that making more altruistic choices may be better for their long-term performance.

Many of Rivals' top-performing players choose support roles

Many Marvel Rivals players don't want to play anything other than duelist

One of the biggest complaints about Marvel Rivals now it is players' reluctance to play as Vanguard or Tactician heroes. Many players will quickly gravitate toward dueling heroes, who typically get the most kills thanks to their high damage. This leaves teams without a tank to absorb damage or a healer to support the rest of the team. Players appear to prioritize personal performance over the well-being of the entire team. However, looking at the statistics of the game's top 500 players shows that Duelists aren't the only ones Marvel Rivals heroes who can perform well.

Thanks to Reddit user-collected statistics Aggravating Party_Job9976of course the top 500 Marvel Rivals players choose Vanguards and Tacticians as often as they choose Duelists. In fact, some of the top picks for the game's best performing players are not Duelists. Looking at the pick rate chart provided by Aggravating_Job9976, the four most picked characters among these elite players are Doctor Strange (Vanguard), Luna Snow (Tactician), Mantis (Tactician), and Magneto (Vanguard).

That's not to say that duelists aren't still chosen very frequently. The next two most picked characters – Hela and Psylocke – are both duelists. That being said, it is clear that Marvel Rivals'top 500 understand the importance of diversifying their choices.

Marvel Rivals teams need diverse compositions

Vanguards and strategists keep teammates alive

Adding a Vanguard or Tactician to a Marvel Rivals team can make a huge difference in the performance of the team as a whole. To understand the impact these characters have, It may help to look at the numbers provided for damage blocked and healing performed on average. Both healing and damage blocking prevent players from being eliminated, which is vital for a team to maintain momentum and press objectives.

Looking first at blocked damage, Aggravating_Job9976's stats show that Groot blocks on average around 38,000 damage in a game. Magneto – the most popular Vanguard in this group – is slightly lower at 34,000. To put this into perspective, dueling heroes have around 250–300 health. This means Groot absorbs enough damage to avoid nearly 130 kills per game. Now, this is not a perfect calculation. Groot is easier to hit than a Duelist, so each point of damage he blocks doesn't necessarily equate to the damage dealt to a hero. Still, Groot is probably avoiding a fair number of deaths.

Likewise, strategists heal a lot of damage, which also prevents heroes from being eliminated. Luna Snow heals an average of 25,000 per round when played by one of these top performing players. Unlike a tank's block damage, this can be calculated individually, as players need to have taken damage for it to be healed. This also doesn't take into account the additional benefits of having a tactician, like Rocket's ability to resurrect fallen heroes, which saves a lot of time waiting for them to respawn and get back into action.

These statistics should make function blocking unnecessary

Players should take tips from the best players in the game and self-correct

There has been a lot of talk about Marvel Rivals adding a function lock feature, similar to how Surveillance solved his problems with team composition. There are some problems with function locking; for example, sometimes it makes sense to switch to a DPS character in certain situations, and role blocking prevents making that kind of instant call. Additionally, players cannot switch roles if someone is having difficulty in a particular match but doesn't know how to play another hero in their chosen role.

It also appears that, from now on, Marvel Rivals'The developers are not planning to add a function lock feature. This means it's up to the players themselves to figure out current team composition issues. That said, looking at these stats should convince some players to switch to a different role. Not only do Vanguards and Tacticians make a demonstrable difference in a game, but many of the top-performing players choose to play them.
