Simon Kinberg is confirmed to work on a new Star Wars trilogy, and I have a theory about when it will be set. Despite the various Star Wars TV Shows Produced for Disney+, Lucasfilm Has No Shortage of Upcoming Star Wars films, with two scheduled for release in 2026 and one in 2027. This does not include the countless others Star Wars films in development or canceled after being announced. Such a wide range of projects will continue to fill a Star Wars timeline filled with various books, comics, video games and more.
Even with so many Star Wars stories on the horizon, none are confirmed to be set in an era that has remained untouched since Disney purchased the franchise. The new Kinberg Star Wars The trilogy could be set at any point in the timeline, but I personally think Lucasfilm will finally enter this unexplored era and usher in a new wave of stories. It has the potential to be as incredible as the same era Star Wars Legends timeline, and as a huge fan of the Expanded Universe, I couldn’t be more excited about this possibility.
Only a portion of the official Star Wars timeline has no blueprints
The Old Republic era was not touched in the canon
Of all the eras of storytelling in the official Star Wars timeline, only one has remained relatively untouched in the canon. James Mangold’s next film Star Wars The film will be the first story from the “Dawn of the Jedi” era, exploring the origin of the Jedi Order 25,000 years before the films. The “High Republic” era became a transmedia enterprise with countless books, comics, and even TV shows like The Acolyte. The era of the “Fall of the Jedi” is when the Star Wars The prequel trilogy takes place, while the “Reign of the Empire” era explores the dark times between Episodes III and IV.
The era of the “Age of Rebellion” encompasses the Star Wars original trilogy, the “New Republic” era is where The Mandalorian and its developments are defined, and the era of the “Rise of the First Order” encompasses the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Finally, the next Star Wars The film will usher in the era of the “New Jedi Order”, beginning 15 years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. With eight Star Wars eras that contain stories or will have some in the coming years, the only part of the timeline left blank is the “Old Republic” era.
I think this would give Lucasfilm the freedom to tell an Old Republic story that works within canon, without having to radically contradict the Legends stories that so many fans already love.
Node Star Wars Legends timeline, the Old Republic era lasted approximately 25,000 BBY to 1,000 BBY. While there were a lot of great stories set during that time, thousands of years ago they didn’t have any information, which means there are still a lot of stories to tell. I think this would give Lucasfilm the freedom to tell an Old Republic story that works within canon, without having to radically contradict the Legends stories that so many fans already love.
KOTOR was one of the best legends stories ever
Truly putting the choice in the player’s hands
One of my favorites of all time Star Wars stories from the Legends continuity is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republicand I know I’m not alone in that opinion. Set 4,000 years before the Star Wars films, KOTOR follows a Republic soldier who is recruited to train as a Jedi and track down Darth Malak’s superweapon: the Star Forge. Along the way, the heroes must unravel the mystery of Malak’s fallen master, Darth Revan, who may have a secret connection to the main character.
As someone who consumes a lot Star Wars media, I appreciated it KOTOR is packed with stories that connect it to previous stories while also adding a new story to the franchise. The game’s RPG elements allow the player’s choices to affect their alignment with the light or dark side of the Force, resulting in two different endings. Most importantly, the game has a legitimately good story with a fantastic group of characters, something that’s not easy to achieve when the main character is essentially designed to be a blank canvas.
The first KOTOR the game later spawned its own franchise which consolidated the Old Republic as one of the Star Wars‘best times to tell stories. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords was just as fascinating as its predecessor, and although KOTOR III was tragically cancelled, the online game Star Wars: The Old Republic eventually helped fill the void. Additional books, comics, and reference guides have delved deeper into these games, giving Star Wars fans some of the most compelling characters and plots in the franchise’s history.
I think Simon Kinberg is making a KOTOR trilogy
This era has the most creative potential
With so many excellent sources to draw from and a time span of at least 20,000 years to work with, I wouldn’t be surprised if Simon Kinberg was making a KOTOR trilogy. Even though it’s not a direct adaptation of the video game, this name would immediately catch the attention of fans and even casual viewers who have heard of it. Of course, one KOTOR the remake is currently in development, which may cause confusion, but having an Old Republic trilogy in general is absolutely plausible.
This just leaves the question of what Kinberg’s potential would be KOTOR trilogy could be, and I have some ideas. One option is for Kinberg’s trilogy to pick up where James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi leaves off.exploring the early days of the Old Republic, now that the Jedi Order has been established. This period has never been fully explored in Legends, with the Star Wars: Rise of the Jedi comic book and spin-off novel ending with the Je’Daii Order still isolated from the rest of the galaxy in the Tython system.
Another possibility that fascinates me is exploring the conflict surrounding the Great Scourge of Malachor of Star Wars Rebels. As someone who previously worked on the show, Kinberg can finally show this battle on screen and reveal details about what led to it and how it affected the Jedi Order. Even if Kinberg goes a completely different path, an Old Republic trilogy sounds extremely exciting to me, but I suppose we’ll have to wait and see how much of a commitment Lucasfilm is willing to make to this era in Star Wars canon.
