One of the great things about Star Wars Rebels is the many connections that are made to the original Star Wars trilogy, but I can’t believe we all missed that one reference. Rebels Mainly follows the members of the Ghost crew as they work in the Rebel Alliance to take down the Empire. Rebels is one of the few cases in Star Wars Where we get to see the growth of an individual through their Jedi training in Ezra Bridger.
One of the reasons Rebels is so loved by Star Wars Fans, myself included, is because it is so grounded in themes of found family and questions what someone would do for the ones they love. to me, Rebels is the perfect show because it connects so many other aspects of Star Wars. It brings back fan-favorite characters like Captain Rex and Ahsoka Tano, but it honors where they’ve been and blends their story with the original trilogy. RebelsLightsaber duels are especially entertaining because Jedi like Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger are always up against formidable foes.
Lightsabers emit green sparks when clashing
Even when we don’t think they should
One of the coolest details we get to see over Rebels is this When lightsabers collide with each other, green sparks are emitted, no matter the color of the lightsaber. The most common color clashes are Kanan Jarrus’ blue lightsaber and Ezra Bridger’s first lightsaber with the red blades of the Imperial Inquisitor or Darth Vader. However, there are other colors of lightsabers seen throughout Rebels. Ezra Bridger constructed a green lightsaber for seasons 3 and 4, but we also see Ahsoka Tano’s twin white lightsabers, as well as the Mandalorian darksaber.

Usually, when red and blue meet, they form purple, but this is not the case when lightsabers clash in Rebels. No matter the color of the blade, the sparks emitted are green. This is obvious when there are lightsaber duels in dark settings, such as these Rebels Season 2 finale “Twilight of the Apprentice.” While on the Sith planet Malacher, Kanan, Ezra and Ahsoka encounter three Imperial Inquisitors and Maul, which eventually ends in an epic duel between Ahsoka Tano and her former master, Darth Vader. Due to the dark scenery of Malachor, the green sparks of the lightsabers are even more noticeable.
Lightsabers in the original trilogy did the same thing
Rebels’ humor to the original trilogy is subtle
Back to the first lightsaber duel seen in the original Star Wars Film (later retitled A new hope), when they burst, they drew green. This effect can be seen when Obi-Wan Kenobi duels Darth Vader on the Death Star. It’s a small detail meant to be an homage in RebelsBut it also creates continuity between the show and the original trilogy films, which take place just a few years after the Rebels Series finale.

It’s not entirely clear why lightsabers glow green, but we do know that the blade of a lightsaber is plasma and is powered by the Kyber crystal inside the heist. It is believed that when the plasma of two blades strikes each other, green sparks are normalKind of like when metal strikes metal, it emits red and orange sparks. Rebels is one of my favorite shows because there’s always something new to discover, and the green lightsaber sparks are just another reason why Rebels Continues to be one of the most connective Star Wars Titles.
