There’s a trick every Stardew Valley farm should use to save space and keep the animals happy

Taking care of a herd of animals in Valley of the Stars It’s a lot of work. Players need to take care of their chickens, cows, ducks, goats, rabbits, sheep and pigs every day to keep them happy. Not to mention the effort required to keep the herd fed throughout the seasons, as players need to provide ample space for grass to grow in the warmer months and plenty of hay for the winter.

As the player grows his farm by adding barns, chicken coops, and larger farm areas with the help of sprinklers, he will discover how quickly space runs out. Since more space on the farm equals more profit, considering the large areas needed for crops and for barrels, casks, olive oil makers, beekeepers and canning jars, Being economical with land use is a big deal for later hunting farms. Fortunately, there is a workaround for players who need every square inch of space on their farms.

Silos can take up a lot of space on Stardew Valley farms

A building for just one season

The only building that takes up a lot of space on the farm is the silo. An incredibly important building, at least for a month, the silo stores hay for each animal to snack on during the colder times of the year when they don’t come out to eat the abundant grass. Silos occupy a 3×3 space and store only 240 haywhich isn’t much when players start upgrading their farms and caring for a larger number of animals.

A single silo feeds nine animals during the winter, so any farm with at least one Deluxe barn and one Deluxe chicken coop (each houses 12 animals) would need three silos. That’s a lot of space to feed the animals in a single season of the year.

How to Store Hay for the Winter with a Silo

Save space and keep your animals well fed

There is a way to get through the entire winter with just one silo taking up space on the farm. As explained by Reddit user lookforazebra, the strategy is to place a chest next to the silo. Once the silo has enough hay inside, players can repeatedly retrieve hay from the hoppers in a barn or chicken coop and simply place it in the trunk until the silo is empty. Players can they fit much more hay in their chests than the silo can accommodatewhich doesn’t make much sense with the logic of structural design, but Valley of the Stars also features a talking mouse who sells hats.

The only disadvantage of this strategy is that it cannot be done efficiently if players only have barns or chicken coops with automatic feeders. Valley of the Stars only allows players to remove an amount of hay equal to the empty spaces on the food bench. Unfortunately, there are never any empty bench spaces when players upgrade to an auto feeder. There’s also no way to simply get hay off the bench, so the only way to get hay with an automatic feeder is to use a pump inside the barn or chicken coop, which may seem like overkill for 12 pieces of hay.

Silos cannot be upgraded, but chests can

This building needs an update

Unlike virtually all other construction players can build on their farm with the help of Robin, silos cannot be updated. This is a major drawback in animal care, as players will have to continue dedicating more space to feeding their livestock during a single season. Not being able to upgrade the silo seems as a huge oversight, especially since large chests were introduced by ConcernedApe in update 1.6 for Valley of the Stars earlier this year.

The large chest is a simple update to the classic storage solution, which contains 70 slots for different items. When compared to the normal chest’s 36 item slots, the big chest looks like a worthy investment. Players can get the recipe for this upgraded storage from Robin, and it costs 120 wood and two copper bars to craft, which seems like a lot compared to the mere 50 wood needed for a normal chest.

If there is Valley of the Stars players really want to upgrade their storage and keep your animals fed for the winter without sacrificing space On their farm, all they need is a barn or chicken coop that doesn’t have an automatic feeder, a silo, and a large trunk or chest if they think they’ll need even more storage. The silo can be a Valley of the Stars basic, but it gets better when accompanied by a little extra strategy and some unconventional techniques.
