As part of the new ‘From the Ashes’ era of the X-Men, Jean Gray has been traveling the cosmos, protecting it from major threats such as the dark god Perrikus and Thor villain Gorr the God Butcher. She was also drawn into combat with Thanos’ Black Order, defeating them with the message to, “Tell Thanos he can face me himself.” Now, the Mad Titan is accepting Jean’s challenge.
That’s not just what Thanos fans know – the Mad Titan has been enhanced by Jean Grey’s new enemies, the Dark Gods.
X-Men Founding Hero Phoenix Is Taking on Thanos
Jean Grey’s Cosmic Odyssey is heading towards the Mad Titan
During the conclusion of Marvel’s 2019-2024 Krakoan Era, Jean Gray unlocked the secret of the Phoenix’s origin. A being beyond time and space, who was “born” only recently, as Jean has connected with all mutants from the past, present and future to combat the divine artificial intelligence known as Enigma. Jean slaughtered this existential threat, leaving her more connected and in tune with the power of the Phoenix than ever before. Although this untold power has corrupted Jean in the past, she now finally controls her abilities, resolving to do good on a cosmic scale.
However, a cosmic scale comes with cosmic villains, and Thanos is trying to eliminate Jean Grey, having received a power-up from his recent antagonists, the Dark Gods. The Phoenix Force is the ultimate force of creation in the Marvel Universe, while Thanos has a religious and romantic reverence for death. This is a fight decades in the making, as Jean Gray unleashes herself against a villain who is, in many ways, her cosmic opposite.
Having connected to the Phoenix at the time of her creation, Jean Gray has the definitive version of her powers in any reality.
X-Men’s Jean Gray has already proven she can kill Thanos
Even Thanos can’t match the power of the X-Men’s peak powerhouse
In Jean Gray’s favor is the fact that she has already taken down Thanos alone. In the recent book by Christos Gage and Greg Land Original X-Men #1the team’s founding members were plucked from their home reality by an ultra-powerful version of Jean from another universe. As an introduction to their new ‘leader’, the team learned that in their world, the connection with the Phoenix gave Jean Gray the power to defeat Thanos and Ultron Solo. The revelation confirmed that Jean certainly has the potential to take down Thanos alone, but it remains to be seen whether the same will happen in the main Marvel timeline.
Having connected to the Phoenix at the time of her creation, Jean Gray has the definitive version of her powers in any reality. If some version of Jean Grey’s Phoenix was ever able to take down Thanos, then mainstream Jean has the same power. The divine hero of the X-Men he can Defeat Thanos using your new powers, but power is only half the battle, and the Mad Titan has always been a master tactician with extensive knowledge of the galaxy’s cosmic forces. With your allies and enemies in the mix, and with Thanos boasting a new Dark Gods power-up, fans will have to check it out Phoenix #7 to see if the foundation X-Men the hero is truly ready to take down the ultimate villain.
Phoenix #7 is available from Marvel Comics on January 22, 2025.
