Evil is making a major change to the Broadway musical that will have a significant impact on the Tin Man’s origin story. Even though the Tin Man’s transformation doesn’t occur until Wicked: Part TwoYour story will begin on the first Evil film, with Ethan Slater cast as the munchkin Boq. He is a student at Shiz University, and although he ends a relationship with Elphaba’s sister Nessarose (Marissa Bode), It’s Glinda (Ariana Grande) that Boq is really interested in.
Much of Boq’s story revolves around his unrequited feelings for Glinda and his resentment towards Nessarose, which he continues to feel even after graduating from Shiz. This culminates in Nessarose casting a poorly pronounced spell that shrinks Boq’s heart. Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) must intervene to save Boq’s lifebut this will cost him being transformed into the Tin Man. Due to an important change that the first Evil film is being made, the preparation for this game-changing moment will be very different.
Boq genuinely likes Nessarose as a friend in the movie Wicked
They’re more connected than in the Broadway musical
In the musical, Boq only takes Nessarose to the dance because he wants to impress Glinda, who tells him during the Evil song “Dancing Through Life” which “I know someone would be my hero if someone asked her.” However, Slater teased a “Meet Boq” promo Evil film video that when Boq and Nessarose dance, it’s “a very beautiful moment of connection between Boq and this woman he really likes, but doesn’t loveand I think the dancing reflected that in a way that I’m very, very proud of.”
Based on Slater’s comments, Boq and Nessarose will be genuine friends in the first Evil film. Boq will like and appreciate Nessarose for who she is, even if he doesn’t love her romantically and still longs for Glinda. This friendship ensures that there will be a more authentic bond between Boq and Nessarose. Such a change will help Boq to be more subtle, pleasant and less manipulative in the first part of the musical adaptation.
This change will make Boq and Nessarose Wicked: Part Two’s story more tragic
Their story changes the context of Boq’s fate
After lying to Nessarose about her feelings for years and her disturbing fixation on Glinda, The fate of Boq’s Tin Man feels somewhat earned in the Broadway musical. This is further emphasized by Boq calling for Elphaba to be killed during the song “March of the Witch Hunters”, even though she was the one who saved her life. How Boq and Nessarose will be good friends during their youth, at first Evil movie, it will be more tragic to see him become her personal servant in Wicked: Part Twoalong with his mispronounced spell shrinking his heart.
Boq will no longer be someone who deserved the fate of becoming the Tin Man. Instead, IIt will be more tragic to see Boq and Nessarose turn against each other despite their history as friends and the connection they shared while dancing years ago. While the overall story of the musical remains the same, changes like this will add even more depth to the musical. Evil films and add more depth to Boq, Nessarose and their relationship.
