The Veilguard cheat actually lets you import your Inquisitor’s appearance

The protagonists of the four Dragon Age Games are incredibly well-liked and often lovingly and meticulously personalized. Often these custom characters will appear in subsequent games to help and often “pass the torch” to the new protagonist facing the latest threat to Thedas. And, in BioWare’s latest release, Dragon Age: The Veilguarda custom Inquisitor makes a cameo to help Rook against Solas.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard introduced a deep and sophisticated character creation menu that gave players almost complete control over the appearance of their tower in ways never before available in the franchise. Unfortunately, despite all the new features available in this menu, there is no obvious functionality for players to start a new playthrough. Dragon Age: The Veilguard and import Rook’s appearance from a previous save when customizing the Inquisitor. However, despite not having a simple button, it seems the import function for Rook may actually work for the Inquisitorif players are willing to use a small workaround.

Fortunately, as discovered by Bluesky user @saewuvv and later reported by Kotaku, Importing an Inquisitor is as easy as importing a Tower, as long as players do some complicated preparation first.

Only Rook’s appearance can be changed during the gameso players only have one chance to hit their Inquisitor before they are skin locked for the entire campaign. The ability to import a custom appearance for the Inquisitor allows players to not only start a new save more quickly, but also make smaller-scale changes and refine their hero’s appearance within Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s art style across multiple playthroughs.

How importing an Inquisitor’s appearance works

To import a custom Inquisitor into a new Dragon Age: The Veilguard save the file, players will need to start a New Game and resist the temptation to choose Import Character immediately. Instead of, immediately scroll through the End menu options and open the Past Adventures: The Inquisition menu. Select Make changes and then Edit Inquisitor. Go to Appearance and choose Customize.

Next, do a little customization. It can be anything from moving the head shape sliders to changing the hair color or style in the default preset. The goal is to ensure that the game recognizes that there is a new, custom appearance for the Inquisitor, which will now appear in the Appearances screen. Choose Accept changes and notice the new square on the screen next to the preset options containing a large scissors symbol.

Go back to Finish, choose Accept, Finish and Exit customization. When prompted that the Inquisitor’s appearance cannot be changed later, choose OK. Then close the Past Adventures menu and return to Lineage. Choose Import Character and select the save file that contains the Inquisitor. Now, when you open the Edit Inquisitor menu again, select the square that contains the scissors to also import the Inquisitor’s appearance. From here, it should be possible to make changes to both the Tower and the Inquisitorand all choices made the first time to customize the World State will be imported along with the Inquisitor’s appearance.

You can also start a new playthrough with a favorite Tower but import an Inquisitor appearance and Inquisition choices from a separate save following the same steps before continuing through the Inquisitor menus to the Summary tab and choosing Finish again. Then go back to The Veilguard Lineage tab and choose the Import Character option again. This time, select the Tower to reuse and return to the Finish screen. The text on the right side of the screen should already read Past Adventures: The Inquisition: Custom. Do not open the Past Adventures menu again.

After that, the player can make other changes to the Tower and start the game normally. It’s a neat trick to cover a feature that initially seemed missing from the Dragon Age: The Veilguardand is very useful for franchise veterans.
