The Death of Bruce Wayne’s Parents Defines the Dark Knight
Batman’s backstory has been retold countless times, although its core aspects have remained the same in each iteration. Young Bruce Wayne is watching a movie with his parents, and while walking through Crime Alley, they encounter a mugger named Joe Chill. In a panic, the robber shoots Thomas and Martha. causing Bruce to watch in horror as his parents are killed right in front of him. This tragedy determines who Bruce will grow up to be and sets him on the path to becoming Batman.
Losing his parents in Crime Alley was the driving force behind Bruce Wayne donning the cape and cowl.. After watching his mother and father die at the hands of a criminal, Batman dedicates his life to avenging them while stopping Gotham’s criminal elements from doing the same to anyone else. His mother still present in the Ultimate Universe is a huge difference that sets this updated origin apart from anything that’s been done with the Batman mythos in the past, and this first issue offers clues about Martha’s role in Bruce’s life.
