The tunnels connected to the silo: where do they go?

Notice! This article contains spoilers for Silo season 2 episode 5.Silo season two is gradually unraveling the tapestry around many of its underlying mysteries, but the truth behind its strange tunnel system remains hidden. Adapting the second half of Hugh Howey's first book Silo book, Silo season 2 runs through two parallel narratives. While one focuses on changes on the political scale in Silo 18, the other revolves around the protagonist, Juliette, who races against time to find a way to return home. Both narratives are equally gripping, but the one that unfolds in Silo 18 seems more intriguing as it offers more questions than answers.

In the direction Silo After the first season's finale, it was hard not to be curious about the many ambiguous storylines and theorize how the show would progress in future episodes. One of the biggest mysteries that remained with audiences long after the first season's credits rolled was the purpose of Silo 18's underground tunnel system. Silo season 2 doesn't mention anything about the tunnels. However, episode 5 of the second part finally refers to them, suggesting that they could become pivotal to many future story developments.

Lukas Kyle and Bernard discovered tunnels on the silo map

Their discovery builds on the season 1 mystery of a silo

In Silo In the first season, Juliette discovered a message from George Wilkins long after his death. Although the message mentioned numerous things, it also revealed that the tunnels beneath Silo 18 had immense significance. Wilkins also briefly talked about a mysterious door at the bottom of the Silo, which was underwater. Referring to the body of water, Wilkins said: “I suppose you're wondering what I did with the water. Well, it turns out there was nothing to worry about.“These subtle revelations in Silo Season 1 suggests that the underground tunnels are hidden behind a door at the bottom of Silo 18.

Lukas surprisingly discovers a map to Silo 18, which confirms that a tunnel system connects his underground city to the outside world.

In the direction Silo At the end of Season 1, Bernard seems surprised when Juliette mentions the tunnels to him, suggesting he knows nothing about them. His final interaction with Juliette also leads him to collect the broken pieces of George Wilkins' hard drive, in the hopes that he can recover the information on it. The second season builds on this, when Bernard orders Lukas to repair the hard drive and extract information from it. Lukas surprisingly discovers a map to Silo 18, which confirms that a tunnel system connects his underground city to the outside world.

Do tunnels connect to another silo?

Lukas only notices that a tunnel appears to lead out of the Silo. When Bernard asks where he's going, Lukas seems as clueless as the IT boss. However, in Silo Season 1, when George shows Juliette the lower level of his Silo, which apparently leads to a mysterious door that likely connects to the tunnel system, Juliette also notices a huge drill just above the water collecting above the door.. The drill appears large enough to accommodate many Silo citizens.

Although Juliette and George know nothing about the purpose of the machine, it could probably be used to drill from one silo to another using the tunnel system. Considering its size, it would require a lot of fuel to operate. However, given that it's kept right above the door protecting the tunnel system, it's hard not to believe that it has a lot of importance in the overall narrative. Since the outside world on Apple TV+ Silo seems to just have an infinite expanse of silos, it seems likely that the tunnel system connects them to each other.

How the tunnels could be the key to Juliette's return to Silo 18

Juliette could use the Silo 17 tunnel to access Silo 18

Even though Juliette is determined to build a suit to survive the outside world and return to Silo 18, her efforts have been fraught with many setbacks and challenges. In Silo In episode 5 of season 2, she even manages to get her hands on a helmet, which is one of the pieces of the insulated suit that she must assemble to return home. However, if you fail again, you may have to resort to other extreme measures to return, because a destructive rebellion is about to break out in Silo 18.

Silo Season 2 confirms that Juliette gradually overcame her fear of water and learned to swim. Assuming Silo 18's design is similar to Silo 17, Juliette can use her new swimming ability to access the tunnel system at the bottom of Silo 17. If the tunnels actually connected one silo to another, she could also use Silo 17's tunnel to find her way to Silo 18. However, to achieve this in Silo In future Season 2 episodes, she may have to find a way to breathe underwater. Or, if she learns how to use the drill, she can use it to dig all the way to Silo 18.
