The story of Shadow The Hedgehog from Sonic 3 could have been very different if it weren’t for this decision by Jim Carrey

The long awaited Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will officially confirm Shadow the Hedgehog’s origin story – which could have turned out very differently if not for a decision regarding Jim Carrey. From the beginning Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2020, Carrey was instrumental in creating the Sonic cinematic universe. Despite the uncertainty swirling around Carrey’s reprisal for the third installment, Paramount confirmed Carrey’s return to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 which was great news for Shadow’s story.

What’s interesting is how Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will expand the canon of Sonic lore by introducing Dr. Gerald Robotnik, who was first seen in Sonic Adventure 2. Gerald is the grandfather of Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, who was confirmed to be body voiced by Carrey. Despite the film being centered around the long-awaited cinematic introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog, Jim Carrey will likely steal the show when Robotnik becomes the film’s hero. This also allows him to play the new Sonic the Hedgehog 3 character, Gerald Robotnik, whose presence ensures that Shadow’s story maintains consistency with the source material.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with Gerald Robotnik suggests that the film is directly adapting Shadow’s debut story from the games. With the trailer revealing very little about his character, Dr. Gerald Robotnik’s role in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 it is not clear. However, long before the events of Sonic Adventure 2, the older figure was integral to the creation of Shadow the Hedgehog. The narrative could not have done justice to the origins of the franchise’s beloved antihero without Carrey’s return in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

It’s almost impossible to defend Shadow’s origins without the presence of Gerald or Dr. Robotnik. Admittedly, Carrey wasn’t necessarily required to portray Gerald following his lead as Dr. Robotnik. However, the actor doubling roles is significant because it emphasizes the similarities between the relativesessential to stay faithful to the games. On the other hand, Carrey’s absence as Dr. Robotnik would have notably changed the entire dynamic of the film, as the trilogy calls for the villain’s alliance with Team Sonic to fight Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Sonic 3 including Eggman and Gerald Robotnik is a huge relief for Shadow’s character

With any luck, Sonic 3 will delve deeper into Gerald Robotnik’s motivations

There is a lot of content to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to work on, and Paramount’s decision to include “Eggman” and Gerald suggests that the film will remain faithful to the games’ origins. The backstory of Shadow’s creation is extensive and opens up many avenues for the third film to utilize. In the game, Gerald helped with Project Shadow because he believed he could discover the secret to immortality. This is the catalyst for Gerald, who employs drastic measures to raise Shadow, in the desperate hope of discovering a cure for his granddaughter’s fatal illness.

That being said, Gerald Robotnik was still unwilling to weaponize Shadow the Hedgehogwhich resulted in the scientist providing him with a human-like ‘soul’ in hopes that the hedgehog wouldn’t become a lost cause. These events occur before Gerald is taken into custody and the discovery that Maria was killed by the same forces that were holding him captive. Gerald spends his time plotting revenge against humanity. Dr. Robotnik’s surprise at seeing his grandfather raises many questions that could create many possible directions for the story.
