The first arc of the Stormlight Archive concluded with Wind and Truthand the New Book Provided Additional Meaning to an Iconic Kaladin Line. Wind and Truth the ending finally ends the first sequence of The Stormlight Archivecompleting fourteen years of narrative that began with The Way of Kings while also introducing new ideas to push Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere universe forward. Although it is not the final ending, Wind and Truth it was an ending and, more importantly, it offered references and feedback for the journey so far.
Although it can be argued which Storm Archive character had the best arc in the first five books, Kaladin is without a doubt a fan favorite with some of the most epic moments in the saga. Kaladin has always been an easy character to root for, with his inspiring leadership style, exciting fighting skills, and development of radiant powers. That's why it's so exciting to see his deadly arc end with him becoming not just a Herald but also the King of Heraldsreplacing Jezrien.
Kaladin repeats his iconic “Honor Is Dead” quote in Stormlight Archive, Book 5
Kaladin uses the line twice in Wind And Truth
The first use of "Honor is dead"was in Bright wordsthe novel that is usually considered the best Storm Archive book, with Kaladin's fight scene in the arena being a standout moment. When all hope seems lost for Adolin in his duel against four Shardbearers, Kaladin leaps in with nothing but a spear, managing to win the day and earn Prince Kholin's respect. Kaladin repeats this iconic line twice in Wind and Truth, the first being for Adolin in their brief conversation at the end of the first day, where Adolin assures him that Honor lives through them.
Later when Ishar and Nale are discussing the possibility of Szeth becoming the replacement Herald and reforming the Oathpact, Kaladin repeats the entire phrase as he offers to take Szeth's place.. In fact, both Kaladin and Adolin were right. Honor was dead, for the most part, but now a fragment of it lives on in Kaladin, and the heroes live to fight another day.
What Kaladin's Line Really Means for The End of Wind and Truth
The line foreshadowed that Kaladin would become a herald
Kaladin can lead the other Heralds by example. He is not Honor, the one who should lead them, but he will see what he can do.
It's fun to look back Bright words and considering what the impact of this line means. Kaladin, in many ways, has always been like the Herald, in that he passed The Stormlight Archive like a damaged soul whose life revolved around protecting or failing to protect those around him. By taking the necessary steps to begin repairing his own soul, Kaladin can lead the other Heralds by example. He is not Honor, the one who should lead them, but he will see what he can do.
