Disney has just released new images from the upcoming Disney film, Star Warsand Marvel TV shows, including never-before-seen clips from Andor Season 2 that features an incredible TIE Avenger. Andor is widely considered one of the Star Wars best shows and Andor season 2 is among the most anticipated projects of Star Wars upcoming TV shows. Although details about Andor the second season was kept secret for the most part, These new Disney clips reveal some of the exciting updates coming in the show's second season.
One of the most exciting clips that Disney has just released includes Cassian Andor sitting in the cockpit of a TIE Avenger, a TIE fighter model that was curiously discontinued in Star Wars. The video, posted on Star Wars Official Instagramit shows Bix Caleen, Cassian's friend, telling Cassian that they need a pilot and cuts to Cassian in the Avenger, ready to take off. While the exact plan Cassian and Bix have for this TIE Avenger is unclear, the starfighter's appearance alone has fascinating implications for Andor Season 2 - and for the Empire.
The TIE Avenger is unlike any TIE to date
The TIE Avenger's features make it much more powerful
While the TIE Avenger isn't entirely new to the Star Wars, this appearance in Andor season two marks the TIE Avenger's on-screen introduction in Star Wars canon. The TIE Avenger played a role in Legends, but in canon it was just a prototype and had not yet been shown in Star Wars movies and TV shows. In addition to being an exciting upgrade for the starfighter, it has important implications for Star Wars and raises some fascinating questions.
The TIE Avenger's design is the closest to Darth Vader's TIE fighter, as it is equipped with shields and a hyperdrive.
The TIE Avenger's design is the closest to Darth Vader's TIE fighter, as it is equipped with shields and a hyperdrive. These distinctions make the TIE Avenger much harder to destroywhich would have been extremely useful for the Empire. Not only did the TIE fighters' lack of shields and hyperdrive give Imperial pilots a huge disadvantage compared to Rebel fighters, but this design also meant that pilots would die rather than learn during battle.
Despite the clear advantages of the TIE Avenger, the model was discontinued in Star Wars for unknown reasons. While certain design elements influenced other starfighters, such as Thrawn's TIE Defender, the model itself was apparently abandoned. This makes the Avenger's appearance in Andor season 2 footage even more intriguing and exciting.
The origin of the TIE Avenger legends
The TIE Avengers played a much more significant role in Legends
The TIE Avenger has a much more extensive history in Star Wars Legends, which reveals more about the intentions behind Imperial Avenger's design in canon and offers some interesting hints about what could be coming next Andor Season 2 about Cassian's acquisition of the TIE Avenger. In Legends, the Avenger was created as a change from the Empire's initial approach to TIE fighters. Early on, the Empire prioritized manufacturing as many starfighters as possible, rather than focusing on durability or overall quality.
This TIE fighter model therefore represents an entirely new military strategy for the Empire.– one who recognizes that brute force will not be enough to win. This undoubtedly became clearer to the Empire over time, as the Rebellion proved to be more than just a nuisance. Ultimately, even in Legends, the TIE Avenger was replaced by another variant of the TIE Fighter, the TIE Defender.
Will Andor explain why the Empire never created a fleet of TIE Avengers?
Given this TIE's abilities, it's strange they haven't been used
In addition to presumably giving Cassian a huge advantage in his fight against the Empire, the inclusion of the TIE Avenger in Andor season two could finally answer a big Star Wars question: Why didn't the Empire make an entire fleet of TIE Avengers? Clearly, the Avenger's design had a number of significant advantages, many of which the Empire desperately needed. Throughout the original Star Wars trilogy, the Empire's lack of shields and general inability to defend itself proved to be weak points.
In light of this, it would make sense for a TIE model like the Avenger to be a priority, as it would mean much better defenses for pilots and therefore the Empire more broadly. Possibly, Andor season two will reveal what exactly went wrong with the TIE Avengers (including, perhaps, Cassian stealing this one). Even though Star Wars leaves that question a mystery for now, however, it is genuinely exciting to know that a TIE Avenger is coming Andor 2nd season.
