The very popular video game franchise The Sims is getting a big screen adaptation, with the announcement that a movie is in development and some big names are already attached. The original video game, The Simswas released in 2000, as a character-centric spin-off of the hugely popular city-building game simcity (1989). since then, The Sims has since become the 10th best-selling video game franchise of all time, with four main games in the series, a fifth on the way, and multiple mobile games and now-defunct titles, as well as an entire language used in the games . : symbolically.

In 2007, a live-action version of the game was planned, but it never made it out of development. The announcement of a Sims movie came in March 2024, with little known other than the production company and director attached to the project. The film will be produced by LuckyChap, the production company of Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr, and will be directed by Kate Herron. Briony Redman is also attached, and will co-write the screenplay with Herron.
LuckyChap is best known for its recent huge successes with the Barbie Movie (2023) and Saltburn (2023), but has a string of other hits. Founded in 2014, the company is also responsible for I, Tanya (2017), Birds of prey (2020) and Promising young woman (2020). Kate Herron, the director, is best known for her work on the huge hit series Loki (2021-2023), with other recent credits included Sex education (2019-2023) and Diary (2019), and as a writer of an upcoming episode of Doctor Who. Redman, who will co-write the script with her, also wrote for Doctor WhoAs well as a few shorts.
