Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Simpsons, season 36, episode 9, “Homer and Her Sisters.”
Although Moe finally seemed to find happiness a few seasons ago, The Simpsons season 36 proves that viewers shouldn't be anticipating wedding bells just yet. The Simpsons The season 37 renewal has not yet been announced, but the series is not struggling despite its longevity. If anything, The Simpsons appears to be enjoying a critical renaissance, as everyone from Vulture to YouTube creator SuperEyepatchWolf declared the long-running show “Good again.” The Simpsons Season 36's willingness to change the show's format and rewrite its established tradition plays a major role in this recent wave of critical acclaim.
Experimental efforts like The Simpsons the second Treehouse of Horror special of season 36 or episode 6, “Women in Shorts”, prove that the series is not tied to its usual storytelling style. Sadly, The Simpsons It's also not that consistent when it comes to canon and continuity. The Simpsons has long been famous for rewriting its stories without notice, resulting in constant changes to everything from the ages of the series' main characters to the location of their hometown. The Simpsons never ages, but the show's fluctuating timeline means that marriages, deaths, and even entire characters can fade from existence.
The Simpsons Season 36 Episode 9 Implied the End of Moe's Engagement
Moe got engaged to Maya in Season 33, Episode 4
Perhaps the most infamous example of this was The Simpsons simply forgetting Apu's existence after a 2017 documentary, The problem with Apuhighlighted the character's links to historically problematic depictions of Indian Americans. However, season 36 episode 9, “Homer and Her Sisters,” provides another, more subtle example. Moe is apparently single again in The Simpsons season 36, although the terminally lonely character finally found happiness in season 33, episode 4, “The Wayz We Were.” In this episode, Moe reunited with his love interest, Maya, and asked her to marry him. The episode ended happily when the duo got engaged.
The show revealed that Moe's engagement apparently fell apart off-screen at some point.
How if The Simpsons season 36's sad revelations about Marge's family weren't enough, the long-running series twisted the knife further when the show revealed that Moe's engagement apparently fell apart off-screen at some point. When Homer brought Patty and Selma to Moe's Tavern for the first time, Moe immediately fell in love with the duo and began professing his attraction to them. It's still possible that More was talking about how hot he found them despite their engagement, although this is unlikely considering he began following them with binoculars as the episode continued.
The Simpsons Season 36 Could Still Save Moe's Sweetest Story
Moe's Comments About Patty and Selma May Not Indicate His Single Status
Moe scolding Homer for never mentioning Patty and Selma to him before and talking about them as the women of his dreams apparently proves he's single, but it's not too late for Season 36 to undo this sad unseen breakup. The Simpsons Season 36's big changes to the show's status quo mean Moe could reveal he's still marrying Maya in a future episode and dismiss his comments about Patty and Selma as nothing more than him expressing their unlikely attraction. The Simpsons should undo this split, as it was the sweetest Moe story in a while.
