In response, Itachi’s words reflect his own sorrow and regret, acknowledging that it is he who should be grateful. Their undeveloped relationship is a symbol of the personal sacrifices Itachi made For the greater good, demonstrates the deep cost of his responsibilities, which prevented him from living the peaceful life he could have had with Izumi by his side.

Yugao and Hayate
One of the more forgotten and underrated Naruto Couples are Yugao and Hayate. Although fans didn’t see much of the two as they were minor side characters, their relationship was highlighted as a tragic one. Hayate was the proctor of the Chunin exams, and was killed by Baki, the Sand Siblings’ sensei, after discovering Sunagakure and Otogakure’s plans to attack Konoha.
Yugao, an ANBU member and Hayate’s lover, discovers Hayate’s corpse with her ANBU team and is clearly distraught by his death. Later, during the invasion of Konoha, Yugao visits Hayate’s memorial stone and vows to take him on. Their love story remains tragically incomplete and a reminder of the love life a ninja cannot always have.

Conan and Yahiko
Although Conan and Yahiko’s love for each other seems obvious, fans still don’t see much of their romantic relationship. However, their affection is subtly implied in a brief, intimate moment when Conan bandages Yahiko’s injuries, with the two leaning closer as if about to kiss, though no kiss is shown. The two are shown to genuinely care for each other since childhood, both with a shared goal of protecting their village and ultimately striving for peace.
Their relationship meets a tragic end when Hanzo the Salamander, the leader of Amegakure, captures Konan as a hostage and threatens her life, demanding that Nagato kill Yahiko or face Konan’s death. Without second guessing, Yahiko plunges into the kunai Nagato is holding, and Konan cries out in despair after seeing Yahiko’s sacrifice. After Yahiko’s death, Konan unknowingly followed Madara’s plan as she sought to fulfill Yahiko’s dream in her own misguided way. All that was left of their relationship was the corpse of Yahiko helping fulfill this duty Like Pain.

Asuma and Kurenai
Asuma and Kurenai are a tragic couple whose relationship is cut short by Asuma’s death at the hands of Akatsuki member Hidan. Fans never get to see their love fully blossom, making their love story one of unfulfilled potential. After Asuma’s death, Kurenai is left to navigate the pain of losing her lover and the challenges of raising their child alone as a widow.
Kurenai is a single mother who was forced to live without Asuma’s presence and support. Asuma and Kurenai’s daughter, Mirai, was also left fatherless and she also unfortunately never got to meet her own father. Tsunade meets Dan shortly after her little brother, Nawaki dies in the midst of war. The two bond quickly as they both share the pain of what it’s like to lose their younger siblings in war. Through this shared pain, the two fall in love and Tsunade gives Dan a necklace passed down from her grandfather, Hashirama, as a good luck charm to follow his dreams of becoming a Hokage to protect the village. Just as their relationship begins to develop, Dan is fatally injured in the war.

Their story is tragic because they never got the chance to see Naruto grow up and be together as a family. Their tragic end left Naruto an orphan who was ostracized by his village and never knew what it felt like to be loved by a mother and father.

Obito and Rin
The relationship between Obito and Rin is the most tragic As it ultimately serves as the foundation and starting point of the entire series of Naruto. Obito had loved Rin since their academy days, but he never got the chance to tell her how he felt. When he was crushed by a stone in death, he still could not tell Rin how he felt. After being taken by an old and disabled Madara, he regains his abilities and leaves to see Rin, only to be met with the sight of witnessing his best friend, Kakashi, kill her.
Not knowing why and trying to process everything, Obito awakens his Mannkyo Sharingan and goes on a rampage, killing every ninja in his path. Rin’s death ultimately leads Obito down a dark path of corruption. He becomes convinced that Madara’s goal of creating the world of dreams is the way to go. Obito’s love for Rin is a tragic story of how Heartbreak and loss can lead even the purest souls down a path of darkness.
