WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Beetlejuice 2 (2024)!The main conflict of Lydia Deetz played by Winona Ryder Beetlejuice Beetlejuice revolves around her strained relationship with her teenage daughter Astrid, but one of their biggest arguments could easily be resolved by Delia. More than 36 years after the original film, Ryder, Catherine O’Hara and Michael Keaton return. Beetlejuice 2The cast stars the Dietz family returning to their haunted house on Winter River for the funeral of Lydia’s father, Charles Dietz. When the film begins, tensions are already high in the Dietz family. Lydia’s teenage daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) resents her and denies her ability to see ghosts..
Although Lydia built a famous television career thanks to her gift of communicating with ghosts, which came from the deceased Maitlands in Winter River, Astrid never believed that this ability was real until she met the ghost of Jeremy in Beetlejuice 2. Before developing this ability herself, Astrid denied that Barbara and Adam Beetlejuice ghosts ever existed. Lydia’s inability to see Astrid’s dead father, Richard, led her to believe that her mother had always been lying, and Lydia was unable to convince Astrid otherwise. However, it doesn’t make much sense that Astrid didn’t believe Lydia about the Maitlands, since she wasn’t the only Dietz to see ghosts in Beetlejuice.
Delia and Charles could easily prove to Astrid that the Maitland ghosts are real
Delia and Charles saw and decided to live with the ghosts of the Maitlands at the end of Beetlejuice
Although Lydia and Astrid’s problems remain rooted in the teenager resenting her mother for her reaction to Richard’s death, sending her to boarding school, and making choices for her family that Astrid does not support (such as marrying Rory), Dietz family Conflict over the truth about Lydia’s ability to see ghosts could have easily been resolved years ago Beetlejuice 2. Teenage Lydia may have been able to see the Maitlands throughout the 1988 film due to her acceptance of death and the “strange and unusual”, but BeetlejuiceThe original ending ended with Delia and Charles finally seeing ghosts too..

This conflict could have been ended if Delia and Charles had shared their own experiences. and explain to Astrid that ghosts are real. Astrid even notes after Charles’ death in Beetlejuice 2 that he was “only a half normal person” in the Dietz family, so she would be more likely to believe his story about meeting the ghosts of Adam and Barbara Maitlands.

The absence of the ghosts of Adam and Barbara Maitlands Beetlejuice 2 was a convenient way to avoid having to deal with the actual aging of Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, and also added another reason for Astrid to deny Lydia’s ability to see ghosts. Why Delia never intervened to fix Astrid in Beetlejuice 2
Delia could tell Astrid about her experience with the Maitlands
Delia understood that Astrid did not believe that Lydia could see ghosts, but she never shared her personal experience to confirm the truth of Lydia’s gift to her granddaughter. This Delia never seemed to intervene because she didn’t feel she had the right to correct young Astrid.and did not want to get involved in this conflict. Delia also humorously implies that Astrid’s rejection of Lydia is a form of payback for Lydia herself rejecting Delia as a teenager, so Catherine O’Hara’s character likely simply decided to leave that decision to mother and daughter for Lydia to sort out on her own.
Additionally, Delia was quick to admit that ghosts were haunting their attic. Beetlejuice. Perhaps she thought Astrid would eventually accept Lydia’s gift.and Delia’s own eccentric interests, but decided it would be better if it happened naturally rather than her directly trying to convince Astrid of the truth. Delia and Lydia had learned to get along and accept each other over time, so she may have believed the same would happen with Lydia and Astrid. If he had not died in Beetlejuice 2Charles would be the most likely character to help Lydia convince Astrid.
