before the finale, Screen Rant Interviewed Benjamin Walker and Robert Aramayo to discuss The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 finale, the former having to bite his tongue and not fan himself to suit up in Gil-galad’s battle armor, the latter’s transformation into a warrior in the last few episodes, and Elrond’s emotional state after the death of Celebrimbor and The fall of Eregion.

Walker had to remind himself “To not crawl“Fit for battle

It was humbling, exciting, but also just a lot of fun.

Screen Rant: I love that for both of you, in episodes 7 and 8, we finally get to see Elrond and Gil-galad in action. Benjamin, I want to start with you, and then Robert. Ben, you talked about the passion you have for Tolkien, which comes from your brother. I’d love to hear from you both what it’s like to finally get into that armor and take part in the big battle sequences.

Benjamin Walker: There were a couple of moments where I had to remind myself not to giggle. [Chuckles] Being like, “Hehehehe, I can’t believe I’m going to do this.” Like, “No, I’m the king.” It was a lot of fun, and also moving to see how much went into creating it, from the guys who control the atmosphere to the stunt guys who got into orc costumes since four in the morning. It was humbling, exciting, but also just a lot of fun. Robert was much smarter than I was, so you wouldn’t have thought it was so much fun. Also, I was on a horse for most of it. [Laughs]

Robert Aramayo: [Laughs] It was, it was, yes. I would echo what Ben says. It’s a huge challenge to make, but there are those moments where you go, “Wow, this is awesome.”

The death of Celebrimbor and the fall of Eregion will be vital to Elrond’s future

Aramayo also believes that Elrond’s battle plan may have worked (on 1 condition)

Now it was also quite the emotional season for Elrond, and how he had to succeed with his feelings for Galadriel, but also attract her to the ring, and then lose Celebrimbor, as we see in the last episodes. What is his mentality coming out of the finale? Because for so many people, it is still trying to hold on to a sense of hope.

Robert Aramayo: Yes, it’s complicated, isn’t it? He’s done, and he thinks he’s done Celebrimbor, and Middle-earth by extension. But I think if you know the lore, maybe that failure stays with him and motivates him to, potentially, pay homage to Celebrimbor and what was lost. It was a really complicated time for him, in terms of trying to wrap his mind around what was going on. He just had the feeling in the pit of his stomach that something wasn’t right with the rings, something wasn’t right with the way she was looking at them.

But what I love so much is to think about – talking about the battle – if his plan had come out, if Doreen had shown up, he would have won. I think he would have won, not only because of the dwarves, but if Doreen had been there, I would have won. When you read in the story about Húrin, I think, killing 70 orcs, just as the last man before Morgoth drags him off to the thing, Tolkien’s characters in those emotional moments are capable of incredible things. I think that if I had Doreen next to me, as I expected, we would have won.

Benjamin Walker: And that was something that was unique to you that you brought to the table. You were the only one who could bring Doreen and his men. It would have been, not only a win for Middle-earth, but a win for you, and your confidence in your standing in the Elven Kingdom, yes, yes. It is much more interesting.

Robert Aramayo: Yes, my uniqueness, so the fact that it fails, it’s just devastating.
