Satoru Gojo is revered for his overwhelming power as the strongest sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen. Many see his strength as his defining characteristic, however, it is his vulnerability and depth of character that truly make him the most compelling character. Despite his divine power, Gojo is a character defined by the connections he makes, particularly with Suguru Geto, who grounded him in his humanity.
Due to his unparalleled abilities, Gojo Impressive strength often leaves him an isolated figure. As a solitary character, Satoru Gojo is able to wield his power freely with little to no restrictions. However, Suguru Geto’s importance in Gojo’s life brings out his humanity, leaving him vulnerable to strategic attacks like Kenjaku’s feat in Shibuya. Despite Gojo’s divine power, this means nothing when faced with aspects of his humanity.
Satoru Gojo’s power is impressive, but his weakness makes him attractive
The loneliness of the “strongest”
Gojo is said to be in his element when he is alone, further establishing his place as a god among men. He sometimes appears arrogant, good-natured, attentive to his students, and but often separated from those around them. When he differentiates himself from others, Gojo is free from attachments or emotions that can cloud his judgment and give him greater control over his power. This is the painful conclusion he came to after the Plasma Ship mission failed and was almost killed by Toji.
Due to his tallest stature among other sorcerersGojo often has a carefree confidence and his assurance often borders on arrogance. Gojo’s outward attitude and distinct separation from others are what make him an untouchable figure, free from vulnerabilities that his enemies might try to exploit. However, Gojo is unable to maintain this composed image when Kenjaku uses Geto to break through his emotional defenses. If Kenjaku had gone another way, Gojo would never have been sealed.
Geto represents the humanity that Gojo discards
Kenjaku sealed Gojo by exploiting the only weak spot in his defenses
Although Gojo’s detachment increases his strength, Suguru Geto is the only one capable of breaking through the armor Gojo has built around himself. If Gojo’s divine power is a reflection of his strength, it could be comparable to saying that Geto is a reflection of Gojo’s humanity. Their bond grounded Gojo and gave him the opportunity to experience life with someone who saw him as an equal rather than an untouchable powerhouse.
Geto’s influence on Gojo adds a layer of complexity to his character and later becomes his only weakness. During the Shibuya Incident, Kenjaku’s use of Geto’s body momentarily aroused emotions that Gojo was unable to suppress, shattering the impartial personality he relied on in battle. This calculated manipulation proved that, despite all his power, Gojo’s only weakness was an emotional vulnerability that only Geto was able to expose. It’s this aspect of Gojo’s character that really adds to his complexity, displaying his heart overriding his will to keep fighting, if only for a moment.
Gojo is more than a divine figure
His humanity makes him the most compelling character in the series
Gojo’s exceptional abilities have set him apart since he was a child, placing him on a pedestal among all sorcerers. However, his bond with Geto granted him a sense of humanity and closeness with another person that he hadn’t experienced with anyone else, filling a void of loneliness that tormented Gojo. This is later reflected in the bond he creates with his students, going so far as to trust them with the future of the world.
Additionally, Geto’s powerful abilities showed Gojo from a young age that power comes in many forms. This experience leads Gojo to see the potential in his students, and he genuinely believe that their power could rival yours despite the pedestal on which it was placed. Although Gojo may act carefree, confident, and playful, especially towards his students, this serves as an emotional shield and exposes the greater aspect of his character.
Gojo has become an icon of modern anime, mainly due to his “cool factor” and the many standout moments the series gave him. However, the character’s appeal runs deeper than that. By the end of the series, it becomes clear that Gojo – like Sukuna – represents the loneliness of those who are born superior to others. However, unlike Sukuna, Gojo was able to form bonds by becoming “weak”. Although this may have led to his death, Gojo’s struggles with his humanity and his ultimate acceptance of his weakness make him the most compelling character in Jujutsu Kaisen.
