The penguinArkham’s ending proves that an Arkham Asylum series would be a perfect fit Batman universe. The penguin is the first spinoff series set in Matt Reeves’ Batman universe, but it probably won’t be the last. The series was a resounding success, providing high viewing figures for Max and receiving praise from audiences and critics. There’s no other Batman gig on Max’s schedule as Reeves focuses on development Batman – Part II. However, another series was in development that would center on Arkham Asylum, but unfortunately the show was cancelled.
Details about the Arkham Asylum show were scarce before it was scrapped, but Reeves described it as a horror-based series set in Gotham’s infamous asylum. The show’s setting was also unclear, as it was initially in Reeves’ universe, but James Gunn later confirmed that it would be in the main DCU timeline. Despite the show’s confusing process, DC would be smart to restart development on an Arkham Asylum series, especially after The penguinIt’s a shocking ending.
The Penguin expands the story of Arkham into the Batman universe
The Penguin gave audiences the sinister Arkham Asylum they know from the comics
Arkham Asylum was briefly featured in Batman. Batman visits the asylum to interrogate Riddler after he is captured, and Riddler also briefly interacts with Barry Keoghan’s Joker. A deleted scene showed Batman talking to Joker to learn more about Gotham’s killer, but it wasn’t in the film itself. Arkham’s presence is already established in Batman universe and The penguin expanded on it, showing Gotham’s criminals and the corrupt doctors who only allow the cycle to repeat itself.
Sofia Falcone’s decade-long stay in Arkham showed how cruel Arkham is and how understandable it is for someone to become violent and vengeful after being trapped there. Whether Sofia was guilty or not, she should not have been tortured by the doctors or abused by the other inmates. The representation of Arkham in The penguin shows how broken the system is and why Gotham needs a Batman who can save the city when its institutions fail.
Sofia the Penguin’s ending makes the spin-off even bigger
Sofia Falcone is back where she started
Although Sofia Falcone is a villain, she is one of the most likable characters in the series. Her family and Oz mistreated her and the audience rooted for her redemption despite her cruel methods. Unfortunately, Oz won the war between them and, instead of killing her, sentenced her to a fate worse than death by sending her back to Arkham. Sofia was one of the characters who stole the show in The penguinand the public wants to see their story continue. May not be in Batman – Part II story, but a spinoff would be a perfect way to continue Sofia’s journey.
With Sofia back in Arkham, the Arkham series has a main character that the audience can follow. You can build a narrative around Sofia and use her to create new villains in Gotham’s criminal underworld. The penguin was announced as a limited series, so if there isn’t a second season of The penguinan Arkham show could be the only way to further develop Sofia’s character and capitalize on the Selina Kyle tease featured at the end of the show.
The Penguin tells an intriguing story for Arkham
Sofia could build an empire inside Arkham that rivals Oz
Sofia may be trapped in Arkham again, but she’s not alone. Julian is working at Arkham and it’s unclear what their relationship is like now that Sofia isn’t in charge. Julian could take advantage of his power over her, or he could even be a dedicated soldier (and lover?) to Sofia. Julian could help her free herself and reunite with her half-sister, Selina Kyle. The two could be a dynamic duo as they take revenge on the corrupt men who mistreat women on their way to control Gotham.
Sofia could also change her mind about escaping the city and start rebuilding her empire in Arkham. After killing Magpie, she gained the fear of the other inmates, and she could actually own her Hangman status instead of trying to change it. Instead of trying to work with men, she could start a female-run empire, changing Gotham’s power dynamics and giving Penguin a true rival. Happily, The penguin didn’t kill Sofia, so there are a lot of possibilities for where her character could go in this universe.
