Why Penguin wanted Johnny Vitti accused as the Maronis inside man
Blackmail and some key payback
As it was seen in The penguin Episode 1, Oz Cobb has blackmail photos of Johnny Whitty he was hoping to use against the Falcone underbosses. Not only would a vacancy mean that Oz could perhaps move up in the family, but it would also remove someone who clearly detests Cobb as shown in both The penguin Episodes 1 and 2. However, Penguin’s new right-hand man Victor Aguilar fails to plant jewels in Witty’s car as planned.
This meant that Oz had to improvise at the end of The penguin Episode 2Especially after the Falcons locked the house after finding Erwad, the Maroni beat Sophie secretly brought to the house to question (the same penguin meant to save). Stabbing and killing Erwad, Penguin plants the knife he used on Sofia’s man Castillo. He also planted the diamonds in Castillo’s location, further implicating him as the one behind the hit on the drug convoy. While he didn’t get Whitty as he originally wanted, Penguin still managed to deflect suspicion from himself.
How Penguin’s reveals change his backstory
Oz does not come from a rich family
In the original comics, Oswald Cobblepot typically comes from a family of wealth and influence. However, this is not the case The Batman Universe. Instead, it is revealed in The penguin Episode 2 that Oz Cobb lived with his two brothers and mother in Crown Point, and that they didn’t have much growing up (explaining Oz’s great ambition). Likewise, Oz shares with Sophia that both of Cobb’s brothers died when they were children, leaving him alone with his mother.

It will be fascinating to see what else can be revealed about Oswald’s past The penguin Keep going. After all, the comics version of Penguin also became an only child after the death of his brothers, although that was because he secretly killed them to get more of his mother’s undivided affection. While that does not necessarily mean The penguin’s Oz did the same with his brothers, there is certainly a comical precedent for it.
Why Penguin Threatens to Kill Victor (And Why He’s Keeping Him Alive)
There are very few people Penguin can trust…or order around
Once all is said and done, Penguin threatens to kill Victor if he ever chokes again like he did with the jewels meant to pinch Witty. After all, Victor’s failure almost killed Oz. Threatening to bury him with the bodies of both Erwad and Castillo, Penguin finally decides to give the young man another chance.
Victor is probably the only one Penguin feels he can fully trust amidst all his lies and backdoor alliances. Also, Oz is still not the major crime boss he hopes to become. At the moment, there aren’t many people he can order around like he did with Victor. It is more than likely that Penguin enjoys Victor Aguilar by his side, appreciating the company and also enjoying the little power he has over him. To that end, it makes sense that he would give the kid another chance.
Why Sofia wants to take over the Falcone crime family
She wants what she owes
Angry at her family trying to push her out, Sophia decides to take matters into her own hands at the end of The penguin Episode 2, and she intends to take her seat at the head of the table with violence. As the daughter of Carmine Falcone, Sofia probably feels like she is owed the top leadership role as an inheritance. This is likely even more true for Sofia after Alberto’s death.
moreover, Sofia clearly feels resentment towards the family about her time in Arkham. This is likely related to the fact that she was exonerated, suggesting that there is more at play behind Sophia’s past than the Hangman beyond simply having a mental breakdown and killing seven women. To this end, it is clear by the end of The penguin Episode 2 that she wasn’t going to take Luke’s attempt to push her out of Gotham and the family lying down.
Why Sofia Falcone decided to trust Oswald
She needs allies (and she underestimates Oz)
Meeting at the Falcone Family Mausoleum, Sofia decides that she wants Oz to help her take over the family, and takes him up on his earlier offer for them to join forces. With the new drug operation she and Alberto have been working on. Even though she just accused Penguin of killing Alberto, Sofia knows she’s short on allies and that the road ahead will be an uphill battle. To that end, it seems that Sofia trusts Oz just enough to work with him (for now).
This is obviously an alliance that will fall apart the moment it is revealed that Oz was really Alberto’s killer. That said, it also works in Oz’s favor that he’s once Sophia’s chauffeur, meaning she probably underestimates all he’s really capable of (for now). As such, it will be very exciting to see how far Sofia and Oz’s relationship goes as new allies and inevitable rivals Like Max’s new Penguin Series continues.
