THE Evil The film thrilled Broadway fans with some Easter eggs and clever cameos, but one of them certainly went unnoticed, despite the artist in question's history with the Evil production. Before being adapted into the blockbuster musical film starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande-Butera as Elphaba and Glinda, Evil saw 20 years of success as a show on Broadway, in the West End and on global tours. Nodding to this illustrious history, Evil includes several Broadway cameos from people who played important roles in the show's development and reached great heights.
EvilThe biggest special moment of is, of course, the double appearance of Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, the legendary actresses who respectively originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway. As they perform the new section of “One Short Day” and interact with the now-iconic artists who have inherited their roles, there is a sense that it is all about Evil coming full circle, just before Elphaba launched into the breathtaking lyrics of “Defying Gravity.” However, between EvilOf the Easter eggs and legacy moments, another Elphaba artist goes unnoticed by many.
Glinda’s “Momsie” is Alice Fearn, who previously played Elphaba
West End Elphaba plays Glinda's mother in the scene where she arrives at Shiz
Alice Fearn plays “Momsie” alongside Adam James as Glinda's “Popsicle” when the two briefly appear leaving Glinda in Shiz. Fearn is best known for playing Elphaba in the West End starring opposite Sophie Evans as Glinda. Fearn has had an extensive career in live theatre, mainly in musical productions, including being part of the original UK cast of Shrek the musical (as a replacement for Gingy/Sugar Plum Fairy/Fiona) and later leading the musical Come from far away (as Beverly Bass). Her film and TV career primarily comprises behind-the-scenes vocal work, including in a few other Broadway film adaptations such as Mom Mia! and Sweeney Todd.
Will Glinda's parents appear again in Wicked Part Two?
It would be interesting to see how Glinda's parents feel about her relationships with Fieryo and Elphaba
Glinda's parents do not appear in the stage version of Evil. However, there is opportunity for them to return in Wicked Part Two in ways that contribute to Glinda's character arc. Promotional materials show Glinda in a wedding dress, and her parents would logically be attending her and Fieryo's (Jonathan Bailey) wedding – presumably ruined by him running off with Elphaba. Additionally, as Glinda continues to struggle with her best friend being treated like a criminal, it would be interesting to see how family expectations influence her decisions.
Glinda may speak fondly about her friend to Fiyero because he also misses Elphaba, but this may not be the same with her parents, who may not understand or approve of their daughter having been friends with the Wicked Witch. In June 2024, Fearn was set to be part of the Dear Evan Hansen touring cast as Evan's mother (via whatsonstage. with). However, filming for Evil is certainly done, and any scene with Glinda's parents would likely have been completed very quickly, so this Elphaba could still return to the big screen.
