Patrick J. Adams opens up about his decision to leave Suits at the end of season 7. Adams has been on the series since its first episode as Mike Ross, who Harvey Specter hires as an associate at the law firm Pearson, Hardman. Despite never having attended law school, Mike’s photographic memory gives him an advantage. For seven seasons, the Suits character enchanted fans with his intelligence. At the end of season 7, Ross moved to Seattle with his wife Rachel Zane to run a legal practicewhich ended Adams’ time on the show.
Adams recently opened up about the real reason he left Suits after seven seasons at Jesse Tyler Ferguson Dinner is on me podcast. The actor revealed that he was struggling with depression at the end of season 7what made him start”drinking too much“as a coping mechanism. It was straining his relationship and pushing him over the edge. Besides money, Adams admitted he had no reason to stay for Season 8 and “I never regretted the decision.” Check out what he said below:
I wasn’t taking good care of my mental health and was drinking too much [at] the end of the seventh season. I was in a zone of living a pretty unexamined life. Very miserable [and] I would say, quite depressed. I didn’t have the tools to deal with that depression other than just spending money and drinking too much, and not really knowing how to talk about it.
I would numb myself [to] deal with my insecurity and my fears. And they just weren’t working. And they were hurting my relationship, for sure, but they were also making me a less than present father. That for me was a breaking point where I was like, ‘I think I should probably stop drinking, because I don’t want to be that parent.’ The best thing I think I did for myself was to stop drinking. It just needed to happen for all these other things to happen.
The only reason to stay was… money. I didn’t know what else to offer. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and think about money [Suits star Gabriel Macht] I’ve made it over the last two years, but I’ve never regretted the decision for a second. It was the right thing for my marriage…it was time.
What does this mean for suits
Mike Ross could return in the spin-off
After Adams’ departure, the series continued for two more seasons and ended after nine seasons in 2019. While the series may have concluded, a spin-off series Suits: LA is scheduled to premiere on February 23, 2025, with Macht reprising his role as Harvey Specter in a rumored three-episode arc. The upcoming spinoff has an entirely new set of characters and is set in an entertainment law firm in Los Angeles.
So far, not many plot details have been revealed about the upcoming spinoff series, other than Stephen Amell (Ted Black), who will lead his company through a crisis when the past comes knocking. Meanwhile, Adams is set to star in the yellow stone derived series Madison. On the podcast, the actor also expressed his gratitude and appreciation now, looking back on his time working on Suits. With Mike running a practice in Seattle, Adams’ return to the franchise could be possible one day.

Suits Grew up beyond Mike Ross
In a way, Adams’ feeling of having nothing left to offer by the end of Suits season 7 makes sense. While Mike’s tricks and secrets are charming in the first few seasons, things slowly become tiresome and repetitive. With Suits moving in the direction of being a more grounded legal drama series, Mike posed a problem despite having been in the spotlight since the first season.
So far, Suits: LA there is no character who shares Mike Ross’s secret. It’s unclear whether there will be a similar character in the new Suits spinoff series, but with a focus on entertainment law and set so close to Hollywood, there may be no need after all. Still, it would be nice to see Mike on a joint case at some point.
