It's been 60 years since Susan Foreman said goodbye to William Hartnell's First Doctor, Carol Anne Ford has addressed the potential difficulties surrounding a possible return to Doctor Who. Susan was the Time Lord's first companion, the Doctor's granddaughter, who joined him on his journey and hid on Earth until she attracted the attention of teachers Ian Chesterton (William Russell) and Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill). After almost a year of adventures in the series, Ford left the series in the final chapter of 1966."Dalek Invasion of Earth“restore society.
December 26 marks sixty years since the First Doctor left Susan in 22nd century London, Ford opens Radio Times about whether she would still be ready to return to Doctor Who. The actress admits that she's a little hesitant about returningbeing unsure if she could handle not only the excitement, but also being the sole surviving cast member of the original show.
In fact, I don’t know if I can survive this excitement, it will be beyond all intensity. This is not just a return, it will bring back all the memories of William Russell, Jackie and Bill. [William Hartnell] and other people who are no longer with us. I might get a little confused and start crying. I'm constantly reminded that I'm the last one standing, and I don't like hearing that.
Additionally, Ford understands that after such a long time, there may be enormous pressure from the writers behind the series to bring her back to the main series, as it is one of the show's longest plot threads. Despite this, Ford remains open to a comeback, despite the difficulties it may bring.
He said he would come back and get me, but he never did. I would scold him if I saw him again. I understand their dilemma, how difficult it must be for me to write. 60 years have passed since I first found myself in it. I met Russell [T Davies] several times and I just love it. He is the person who will be the main person to say yes or no - so hopefully it will be a yes.
Is it too late for Susan to return?
Given that Ford's response treats Susan's return as something that has not yet happened, it seems that the long-standing Doctor Who fans shouldn't expect any comeback anytime soon. Susan's return was heavily teased throughout season 14 of Doctor Who.where Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor mentions his granddaughter, bonds with new companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) over long-lost family members, and her return is used by Sutekh (Gabriel Woolf) to capture the Doctor. Moreover, the season ended with hints that the Doctor would track down Susan and finally return to her.
