Brandon Sanderson’s next Born from the mists book can take its best change from Era 1 to Era 2 and apply it to the future of the franchise. Sanderson has plans to start writing his Born from the mists Era 3 Series (Phantom Blood) in 2025, release the first of the new trilogy after all three as-yet-unnamed installations are completed. With the first two eras completed and Sanderson’s writing proficiencies steadily maturing, he now has the ability to analyze the most and least successful elements of each storyline to create an even more successful Era 3 with the next one. THE Cera and Wayne the series predominantly featured a male protagonist in Waxillium Ladrian, but surrounded him with several multifaceted female characters whose impact on the story equaled or exceeded that of the male protagonists. Marasi Colms and Steris Harms are just two of the women in Born from the mists There were 2 that had more complete personas. These two recognized the expectations placed upon them, either pushing them unwaveringly or ignoring them completely. The women of Sanderson’s Era 2 were much more self-aware and didn’t allow outside perceptions to negatively impact their story arc.

Although Sanderson redeemed most of the problems associated with Vin in The original seriesseveral characteristics and internal conflicts fell victim to his inexperienced character. Vin is a compelling character who represents strength and resilience, but often conflicts with the things she identifies as feminine (dresses, makeup, and female companionship). Because she is a powerful character, Vin was an exception to the other women of Era 1 and disassociated herself from everything related to the feminine. Sanderson ended up tackling these issues with female characters, such as the insightful and progressive Tindwyl. However, Strong, supportive women were scarce at this time.

Era 2 focused on the male protagonist Waxillium and Wayne, but bolstered its story with accomplished, impactful women. Marasi embraced the feminine traits she embodied while wielding a rifle and the ability to form bubbles that slowed time. Marasi never considered herself an exception to femininity as she consistently contributed effectively. Another essential leader, Steris Harms, valued many things associated with the feminine when planning and organizing her group. These characters, although secondary, embraced the collaboration between power and femininitynot compromising or minimizing, but incorporating them as strengths.

Sanderson may continue to improve his female characters to make Era 3 even better

The next Phantom Blood series can combine the strengths of Era 1 and Era 2 to produce its most impactful characters yet. With Vin embodying the strong, if somewhat troubled, main protagonist in The original series and characters like Marasi and Steris playing important and accomplished roles in the Cera and Wayne series, Era 3 can build a roster of women who portray complexity, acceptance, and strength. The Epilogue to The Lost Metal (the conclusion of the Cera and Wayne series) has Marasi interacting with the Ghostbloods. Since the next series is titled Phantom BloodMarasi could probably play a significant role.

Era 3 could, and probably will, revisit the possibility of having a female protagonist. There are rumors that the Phantom Blood the series will be set in the early computer age of Scadrial and will feature a female Terris. Brandon Sanderson will continue his trend of empowering female characters who are becoming the standard in the cosmere, as opposed to the exception (just like Vin was). As someone who has always been praised for the way he writes his characters and who always strives to write women, Sanderson will continue to use the Born from the mists universe to showcase women who embrace their gender and are stronger because of it.
