Overwatch 2 has shown what to expect from Season 13, and with that, a sneak peek at Season 14’s new hero, who should be familiar to early fans. Season 13, Spellbinder, is aptly named due to its Halloween release, and will run for nine weeks. This means it will wrap up just before Christmas and Talent players with a new season and hero.
New heroes in recent seasons have met relatively well. Since their initial showcase at Blizzcon 2023, Overwatch 2 Got Mauga, Venture and Juno. Mauga was a powerhouse tankAlthough often to the detriment of others. Venture is a fun combo-based DPS that fits nicely with the mix. Finally, the hero Juno of Season 12 felt out of place at first, but gradually carved her role in the talented supporting lineup.
Everything we know about Phreak
Overwatch’s origins
Phreak was originally teased at Blizzcon 2023, meaning those keeping a close eye on what’s coming to the game have been waiting for Phreak’s official reveal for some time now. Back at Blizzcon, a small draw icon could be seen under the tank role during the tease. However, nothing came of it, at least so far.
Phreak is the same name as a concept character back before Overwatch was announced and was known as Prometheus/Project Titan. This means Phreak’s addition to the game has been a long time coming. They are shown as a lurking man dressed similar to the Junker faction with perhaps some chemical theme. Seen in the above post from Redditor RunItUpthe words “Cannon, stomp and lure” are listed on their concept art, likely early capability plans.
What to expect from Freak
Limitless possibilities
Freak is, unfortunately, a complete unknown right now. Based on the drawing shown at Blizzcon, the character may be completely different from the original concept. The name “Freak” is popular among critics shown by the cinematic and promotional material of the franchise, which leads to the likely addition of a new faction, currently expected to be called “Freaks.” They are also confirmed to be Scottish.

Ability-wise, Phreak is unlikely to have very concept abilities, which sound closer to Mauga’s kit. The drawing shows what looks like spiked shell armor, which would play heavily in their kit if accurate. Perhaps one ability goes into a mode where Freak takes reduced damage and a portion of the damage dealt to them is rebounded back onto the attacker. Another option is a new form of charge that is more similar to Wrecking Balls’ roll, where, for a limited time, Phreak can roll around and deal damage.
Overall, Phreak has a lot of room for potential new mechanics brought to the hero shooter. Despite tanks being inconsistent throughout the life of the sequel, they found a more stable place among the top-tier characters of Overwatch. Thus, it will be exciting to see how the early concept hero has changed and fits into the new ecosystem of Overwatch 2.
