The New Star Wars TV Show Is Giving Me Everything I Wanted From the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy

Star Wars newest TV show, Star Wars: Skeleton CrewIt's giving me absolutely everything I've wanted since Star Wars sequel trilogy - and I'm loving it. THE Star Wars The sequel trilogy still receives a lot of criticism, even five years after the release of the final film in the trilogy. Admittedly, there were a number of problems with the sequel trilogy, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in particular, although I have a more favorable view of the films than most (perhaps with the exception of The Rise of Skywalker).

Part of the problem with the sequels, and why they were such a disappointment to so many viewers, is that they felt like a missed opportunity.. This time of Star Wars the timeline had not yet been explored Star Wars new canon, following Disney's acquisition of the franchise, meaning the story possibilities were endless. Instead of breaking with the norm, however, the Star Wars The sequel trilogy repeated many of the same themes and stories that were seen in the original and prequel trilogies. Now, Skeleton Crew It's finally giving me everything I wanted.

Pirates make a lot more sense as main opponents during this era

The sequel trilogy borrowed from the story Jedi Versus Sith – Skeleton Crew is not

So far, the main villains of the Skeleton Crew it was pirates, including most recently Jod Na Nawood himself, who grabbed Fern and held a knife to her throat to make her renounce her role and title as captain. The most interesting aspect of this was the variety it created in the story. There isn't just one pirate after the group; they have faced a series of pirates, since the children's arrival in Port Borgo in Skeleton Crew episode 2.

Not only does this avoid the Jedi versus Sith story that has become too dominant in Star Warsespecially in light of the sequels, but also, pirates make as much sense as the villains of this era. Skeleton Crew takes place during the New Republic Era, between Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (although, notably, Skeleton Crew is closer to Return of the Jediabout 5 years after the events of this film). While this means that Luke Skywalker was already a full-fledged Jedi, he had not yet actually built his Temple at this point.

This means that there were very few Jedi in the galaxy at this time. This, combined with the fact that the Empire had fallen and the New Republic was in its early years, just getting its bearings, meant this was the ideal time for piracy to take hold in the galaxy. Actually that was why Skeleton Crew creators chose this period in Star Wars as the configuration. In other times, there would have been a lot more oversight, especially in the prequel trilogy era or before.

This was the ideal time for piracy to take over the galaxy.

The characters' understanding of the Jedi is much more realistic

Wim's moment with the lightsaber was so refreshing

One of the best moments Skeleton Crew So far it was in episode 5, when Wim, who is obsessed with the Jedi, got his hands on a real lightsaber. Despite his adoration of the Jedi, he was not ready for the reality of the weapon, and when he lit it, he realized that it was facing the wrong direction, pointing at the ground. This scared Wim, so he threw his lightsaber aside and ran to hide next to Neel and KB.

This moment with Wim and the lightsaber was much more realistic than others Star Wars movies and shows that depict what it would be like to hold a lightsaber for the first time. Wim might love the Jedi and be fascinated with the concept of the Force, but realistically, turning on such a powerful weapon for the first time would be absolutely terrifying. The sequel trilogy was certainly guilty of the opposite, as Finn and Rey picked up Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber and were quickly able to wield it with ease.

Finn and Rey picked up Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber and were quickly able to wield it with ease.

That's not to say I oppose Rey's power or believe her to be a 'Mary Sue', as is the common discourse about Rey - I don't feel that way at all. However, it would have been much more realistic for Finn and Rey to initially fight with the weapon. After all, young people train for years with lightsaber replacements.

Likewise, although Rey is unfamiliar with and so skeptical of the Jedi that she believes they may just be a myth, she seems strangely well versed in what a Jedi is (even if she thinks using the Force is just "lifting stones" initially). In contrast, Wim has been learning and playing as a Jedi, and even he seems unsure if Jod is a Jedi and what would make him a Jedi besides having the Force. This also seems like a much more realistic representation of what someone's understanding of the Jedi would be.

Skeleton Crew is full of Easter eggs, but it doesn't rely on your connections

Skeleton Crew Holiday Special Hologram, Episode 1:2

One of the biggest (and most valid, in my opinion) complaints about the sequel trilogy is how much it builds on other Star Wars films, especially the original trilogy. The Force Awakens in particular, it feels like a beat-for-beat reinterpretation of A New Hopecomplete with an unlikely hero from a desert planet and an oppressive regime led by a dark side Force user and reinforced by stormtroopers. Although the two subsequent films in the trilogy become a little more creative, The Rise of Skywalker it also brings back Palpatine, the main villain of the prequel and original trilogies.

Skeleton Crew proved to be much more innovative in its first five episodes. Yes, there were a lot of Easter eggs in Skeleton Crew from the beginning, but they feel like nods and details to enhance the story, not like the driving force behind the story. Whereas the sequel trilogy felt too dependent on and derivative of other Star Wars stories, Skeleton Crew It really feels like something entirely new to the franchise.

The Skeleton Crew Wasn't Predictable Until Now

Skeleton Crew's story feels genuinely new and inventive

Coinciding with the most creative nature Skeleton CrewSo far, the story hasn't felt predictable. This became clearer in episode 5 when Jod turned against the children. It was obvious that Jod was genuinely interested in Attin's treasure and wasn't helping the children return home just out of the goodness of his heart, but it seemed like he had developed a genuine affection for them, especially after his heart-to-heart with Wim at the beginning of the episode. When he went so far as to pull a knife on Fern, it was shocking.

Now, it's also unclear what will happen in the series' final three episodes, especially considering the kids apparently fell through a trapdoor. That kind of uncertainty is exciting, and while the sequel trilogy had elements of surprise, many of the twists – like Palpatine's return – felt underexplained and disappointing. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew It's not over yet, but it's already giving me exactly what I expected in the first place. Star Wars sequel trilogy.

The first five episodes of Skeleton Crew are now streaming on Disney+.
